Gu tried in Anhui

The official Xinhua News reported that the Neil Heywood murder case had been started in Hefei, Anhui. British citizen Neil Heywood was alleged to be poisoned by Bo-Gu Kailai, wife of CCP's Politburo member and Charisma Party Chief in Chongqing, Bo Xilai. It is believed to be the largest political scandal in decades. It is rumored Shen Zhijing (Beijing) will join the legal defense team of Bo-Gu Kailai, along with Jiang Min (Anhui). Shen defended former Deputy Minister of the Public Security Ministry Li Jizhou. Jiang, being the deputy president of national association of attorneys, is not a trial lawyer.

Although it is understandable to have the case tried in a neutral third place, away from Bo's Chongqing, Anhui is still an interesting pick being one of the most poor areas lagging behind the nation. Why?

The answer is that Anhui is the hometown and power base of Chief Justice Wang Shengjun. Born 1946 in Suxian, Anhui, Wang attended Hefei Normal College in 1966, majoring in History. Due to the start of the Great Cultural Revolution in early 1966, Wang did not have much formal college education. Wang never took a course in legal related areas, and never worked a single day at a court. Still Wang was named the (ninth) Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of People in 2008.

One month after resumed the Chief Justice position, Wang published a sentencing rule on death penalty, where are: 1) law; 2) security status; 3) social feelings. The three point guidance make many law experts puzzled.

Anhui Province is an interesting place. In a sense it is the miniature of China. A small province known for its poverty, Anhui has contributed to numerous famous people in Chinese history. Many scientists, businessmen, political strongmen come from Anhui in thousands of years, probably more than any other place in China. Yet, Anhui itself remained one of the most poor area with the most corrupt political systems.

Updates; 2 Hours Later

Well, the country and the people kept the secret, until the official Xinhua News Agency released an authorized statement from the Party: Neil Heyood (aka Nick Wood in China) was murdered by Bo Xilai's wife Gu Kailai on Nov 15, 2011, over business dispute with Gu and Bo's son Bo Guagua, a Harrow/Oxford/Harvard student. Gu was under investigation by the judicial system.

When Gu Kailai (the official Xinhua news referred to her as Bo-Gu Kailai), an attorney at law, visited the US 15 years ago on a business trip, her US partners described her as the 'Jackie Kennedy of China'. Now, she will be remembered the murderer edition of Jackie Kennedy.

That had been the secret kept well by the millions of people for two months. Wang Lijun tipped off the case to the US officials when he walked in the US Consulate in Chengdu. Wang, the former police chief in Chongqing and a henchman of Bo, was investigating Heywood's death, when he was threatened by Bo, the Party chief in Chongqing. Several detectives were killed or detained by Bo before Wang's walk-in.

In the two months leading to this night, officials were informed of the case in a layer-by-layer fashion from top to bottom. The County-level officials were given a heads up of roughly two hours. Every one of them, millions in total, kept the secret until the official announcement from the Xinhua News. The heads up, from two months to two hours, is the symbol of their ranking over the common people, a power hierarchy they sworn to protect.

Reading between the lines:
Following the official Xinhua News announcement, many Netizens offered their reading and interpretation of the otherwise dry and short statements. It is worth noting that:
1) Bo's son was linked;
2) Bo's wife is referred to as Bo-Gu Kailai, instead of the often used name Gu Kailai. Bo himself is implicated in accusations against his wife; also hinted Gu held foreign passport (therefore no death sentence);
3) It must be something bigger than a business dispute: may it be political, or it may be personal (of romantic nature);
4) A task force 'reviewed' the murder case investigation originally initiated by Wang Lijun and confirmed Wang's findings;
5) Heywood's Chinese wife might have played a role in the case, so much about the tiger wife's fantasy after Rupert Murdoch's Chinese wife fenced off an attacker in the hearing at the House of Commons.
6) Another name Mr. Zhang Xiaojun was cited as Bo's Butler, when referring to the murder case. With the speculation that Heywood being Bo Guagua's butler, it seemed we had a case of a butler killed by a butler, both serving the same family.

Gu Kailai (born 1960) is the fifth daughter of PLA General Gu Jingsheng. Her mother Fang Chengxiu is a decedent of Fan Zhongyan. Gu graduated from Beijing University with a Bachelor's Degree in Law and a Mater Degree in International Politics. Gu is Bo's second wife.

One Man's Death that Changed the World, A Tale as Heard on the Weibo

Nick Heywood (a name 'Neil Wood' was used in earlier report) was an otherwise ordinary English butler, who was hired by a wealthy oversea family who aspired British noble lifestyle. Heywood's job was to take care of one young man, a Harrow and Oxford alumni, who is currently study in Harvard. The young man's name is Bo Guagua.

Nick Heywood was found dead in Chongqing, a provincial-level municipality in southeastern China.

It is said Heywood's death triggered the first 'struggle between two lines' within the Chinese Communist Party since the end of the Great Cultural Revolution. The political fight already toppled a member of the strong Politburo. Half of the Chinese celebrated it as a most important victory for liberty in over 40 years; while the other half of Chinese wept as if they lost their sole hope in the higher-up.

The rumor has it that it all started as an ordinary detective story.

Englishman Nick Heywood was found dead in Chongqing. Naturally Wang Lijun, the Chongqing police chief, a legendarily decorated detective tried to dig out the truth. Clues led to the woman of house, mother of the young man whom Heywood had been attending to. The woman's name was Gu Kailai. Gu, a daughter of a PLA Lieutenant General, is the wife of Bo Xilai. Bo is the Party Chief of Chongqing, where Wang happened to be the deputy major and police chief. Wang's real identity is a most reliable henchman of Bo Xilai.

Later this year, the Communist Party of China will hold their 18th National Conference, while the once a decade power transfer will take place. Bo's son's oversea journey had been attracting uninvited attention and attacks from his political rivals.

A Daily Mail article might have shed some light on the mystery surrounding Wood's death. While Bo Xilai Built his political career as an anti-corruption iron-man. He had a lot to explain on his family's luxury life style, including his wife's high-flying law firm. Words in the media had implied Bo with his salary wouldn't afford sending his son to exclusive schools oversea, such as the Harrow School. In an opening session of the National People's Congress held at the beginning of this month, Bo purposefully told reporters, that Bo Guagua had been funded by 'full scholarship' in every school he went to, which began with Papplewich preparatory and all the way through the Harrow School to Oxford University and the currently enrolled Harvard University. While media reported some of these schools do not offer 'full scholarship' at all, the Daily Mail confirmed a long circulated rumor that Guagua had been suspended by the Oxford on academic performance. In a sense, Guagua's school report cards suddenly became the softest spot in strong man Bo Xilai's political life. While reporters burning night oil to unearth Guagua's course grades, someone fell into the position of having known too much of a taboo. Perhaps, a dead body wouldn't talk.

British citizen Nick Heywood was found dead in Chongqing in October, 2011. The Chinese officials decided Heywood would die of alcoholic poisoning (drunk), however his friends pointed out he had never drank before. While many foreigners had their first glass on their trip to China, because of the culture of binge drinking, the incident would certainly draw attention from stake holders.

Wang Lijun was not an ordinary henchman. So far Wang carried out all Bo's instructions, including many dirty jobs. With Bo's help, Wang had elevated to the role of the top cop in Chinese popular culture while Wang was the combination of the Batman and Spiderman who punish the bad guys, often stepping outside the boundary of law. Nevertheless, Wang's heavy-hand approach was strongly criticized by concerned intellectuals.

Wang's national fame might did some magic. Perhaps Wang somehow believed he was indeed the combination of the Batman and the Spiderman, as the Hollywood dog Bolt did. Anyway, one day in February Wang went to Bo's office and brought up the case that he had been investigating. The rest was history.

As Chinese have been watching from a distance in amazement, Wang was promptly stripped off his police duty. Cops who had been involved in the investigation were arrested, some allegedly were tortured to death. Heywood's body was immediately cremated in disregard of Wang's protest. A few days later, Wang walked in the General Consulate of the United States in Chengdu, Sichuan, a neighboring Province of Chengdu. Wang became the ever first 'Minister-level official' to defect the communist party. After dizzy power struggles within and without the consulate, Wang left the complex 'voluntarily' and surrendered to representatives from Beijing, who flew in to break an armed blockage by forces loyal to Chongqing.

In the following days, the communist party has been in a race to figure out how to handle the case before more details being released by the US. The US congress is on schedule to conduct a hearing on the case to find out on what ground Wang's asylum application had been denied. It is said that the Ambassador Gary Locke recommended to grant the asylum, but the motion was rejected by the State Department. Another blogger Dormant Bear 2012reported that the British government already initiated an formal inquiry through diplomatic channel regarding Wood's death. Financial Times said Bo Guagua and his wife had already been detained by the US on unspecified charges.

Many of the leads were posted on Sina's micro-blogging service webo by a former reporter Yang Haipeng in Shanghai. Yang's wife, a star architect, was sentenced to four years in jail on sketchy legal ground a few month ago. On the sentencing day, tens of thousands of bloggers in China changed their online avatar to photos of Yang's wife as a gesture to show support. It's just another example of how the communist party have been busy burying land mines so that they can step on one later.

Delegate Detained During the Annual Extravaganza

Zhang Mingyu, a Delegate of the Chongqing People's Congress, was detained by police in Beijing, while the National People's Congress was in session from March 5th to 14th.

Zhang's room was broken through by police from Chongqing Municipality in the afternoon of March 8th. A Deputy Police Chief (Mr. Tang) flanked by 4 armed policemen took Zhang from his room during daylight. On March 7th, Zhang announced he would disclose explosive evident that would prove corruptions in Chongqing.

According to Chinese law, a delegate to the People's Congress could not be arrested before he is stripped off his membership by the House.

Both the Party Chief Bo Xilai and the Governor Huang Qifan are attending the National People's Congress in Beijing. The annual sitting is deemed an extravaganza show of democracy under the communists rule. Bo's henchman Wang Lijun defected to the US's General Consulate in Chengdu last month. Zhang revealed a few days ago that another senior official of Chongqing committed suicide.

It is believed that Chongqing police had received permission from Beijing to carry out this obviously unlawful arrest.

The Leading Princelings

Vice President Xi Jinping is due to assume the supreme-leadership of China in one year. Many cited words such as confidence as their first impression, but it could be simply arrogance in disguise.

Other leading Princelings do not fare much better either.

Bo Xilai, the Governor of Chongqing Metropolitian, had been finding his way to the top by revitalizing the Great Cultural Revolution under his absolute reign of the Southeastern city. Thousands of people were persecuted and jailed without going through legal system, some executed despite national outcry. On February 6th, his henchman the police chief Mr. Wang Lijun walked in the US General Consulate in Chengdu seeking asylum protection from Bo himself. The move effectively marked the end of his political ambition.

General Liu Yuan, son of former President Liu Shaoqi who was persecuted to death in the Great Cultural Revolution, had an unusual hurdled path in his political ascending. It seemed the overwhelming national sympathy on his father's tragic political farewell was not enough to propel him at any level in the past 30 years. Liu had to be moved across the board each time to get a promotion. He had been the Governor of a Province, Commander of Paramilitary Troops, Party Boss of a university before being named a Lieutenant General in the Logistical Corp.

Liu made quite a few splashes in what used to be a quiet-on-the-surface pool of political affairs in Beijing one year before the once decade power transition. A deputy of his, Lieutenant General Gu Junsheng was removed from duty under fraud investigations, echoing his vows made last month to fight corruptions in the army. Liu also backed his advisers to make voice on state issues. For example, he ordered the Army to publish a book authored by his adviser Zhang Musheng.

As a matter of fact, both the outsider world, as well as people in China with opposing political views are having great expectations on the new leadership, partially because of the current core's seemingly weakness when facing interest groups.

Xi himself does not have a clean record:

  • Xi divorced his wife, then married a young pop star Ms. Peng Liyuan;
  • Xi was the Governor of Fujian Province when the 'largest smuggling scandal' broke out;
  • Xi was the Governor of Zhejiang when the corruption of Leqing County took place, which ultimately led to public execution of a Village Head Qian Yunhui;
  • Xi ordered to use a girl with better appearance to act in voice of another non-presentablegirl at the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympic;
  • Xi obtained a J.D. from Qinghua University without attending a single lecture in classroom nor writing a single line on paper;
  • Xi interfered to sentence business woman Wu Ying to death so that some local officials in Zhejiang could take her fortune.

After a long waiting, The Princelings are ready to set off conquering the world, but are you ready for the manner it would be executed?

Connecting Dots

Wang Lijun's whereabouts between Monday 2/6/2012 and Wednesday 2/8/2012 might never be confirmed by either Chinese or American government. We may never know what happened inside the US Chengdu General Consulate. Having that said, below is one most plausible plot:

In the months leading to the final show down, Wang should have already sensed Bo's malice. Because of Bo's absolute power in Chongqing, as well as his political clot in the nation, Wang has no chance at all to fight back. Judging from Bo's track record, it was logical for Wang to believe Bo would harm him and very possibly his families and friends. Therefore, it amounted to a duty and obligation for Wang to strike back.

The US consulate is picked perhaps because it is the only place in the southeastern China where Wang can have a direct and uninterrupted communication with central government in Beijing. Wang was under tight monitoring long before he had been stripped off Police Chief duty. He was not allowed to travel. If he try to flee on foot, he might be immediately arrested, or quietly killed as a fugitive.

Wang jumped on an opportunity when he was arranged to inspect a local university as a stage-show to tell the public everything had been normal. He fled in disguise and drove an unmarked car to the capital city Chengdu of neighboring Sichuan Province, where he scheduled a meeting with the US consulate. The Consulate arranged him to sneak in the US General Consulate in Chengdu. However, Wang was identified by a security agent working for the central government.

What happened in the next 24 hours was not clear. Wang might left some important evidence to prove Bo's involvement in crimes. Wang might discusses refuge or asylum status issue with US officials. Wang might spoke to some senior officials in Beijing. Wang might had a talk with his boos Bo.

In the end, outside the consulate there was an armed stand-off between paramilitary troops equipped with heavy equipment from Chongqing and local police who are reinforced by security forces belonged to central government. Bo tried to take Wang back to Chongqing by force, but was pushed back by Beijing.

The US General Consular was not in the consulate at the time on Tuesday night. He went out for unknown reason but could not come back because of road blocks and a man-made traffic jam. Wang received a call from a commander outside the consulate. Wang was told if he did not walk out, then police would break in using the excuse that there might be a bomb inside the building. Wang contacted the General Consular again, and was told he did not know when could he get back to the consulate. Wang decided to walk out. Spokesperson of the US State Department said Wang walked out in his own volition. She also stated there was no threat to the Chengdu Consulate, and US did not request increased security to the consulate.

While Wang walked out, he shouted to police surrounded the building that he had collected evidence of crimes committed by Bo Xilai. Bo was taken by the security forced loyal to the central government, and flown to Beijing within hours.

Now that it had become an international incident. The central government will have legitimate excuse as well as a procedural obligation to launch an investigation against Wang's charges against Bo. It is revealed that a high level delegate had stationed the Jinniu (Golden Bull) Hotel in Chengdu since the incident, and that there was no sign they were leaving anytime soon.

A Picture Is Worth a Thousand of Words

Because of online censorship, the above emoticon posted on the micro-blog Weibo run by Sina told a following fictional story:

Last night, an individual walked in the US Consulate in Chengdu of Sichuan Province seeking refuge protection. The Consulate was subsequently surrounded by troops enforced with over 70 APCs from neighboring Chongqing, a province-level Metropolitan, led by the Mayor of Chongqing Mr. Hong Qifan. More local police and central government security forces rushed to the scene. After negotiations, the US Consulate released the man. There was an armed standoff between paramilitary forces from Chongqing and security forces loyal to Beijing. In the end, the person was taken by security forces from the central government and flew to Beijing via Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport.

Rumor has it that the man in the above story is Mr. Wang Lijun. Wang was released from the position of Police Chief of Chongqing a few days ago. Wang had been credited for his heavy hand measures in cracking down organized crimes, but was also criticized for human rights abuse in the process.

The portrait to the far right was an official picture of Wang in his new assignment, the deputy Mayor of Chongqing in charge of education. It was discovered by the online community that the picture was a Photoshop job of a dated portrait of Wang (left) when he was the police chief. A suit was laid on top of his uniform, and a pair of glasses was added to fit his new role.

Rumor has it that Wang had been placed under tight control for an unknown period. Up to 11 deputies and aides of Wang had been arrested by the Chongqing Governor Bo Xilai. The new post of Deputy Mayor was only a cover for investigation before Wang would be formally prosecuted. Wang already lost freedom, and was in no position to shoot another 'official' photo. The propaganda department had to Photoshop a new 'official portrait' to make people believe it was yet another normal day. Wang jumped on the opportunity, when Bo ordered Deputy Mayor Wang to inspect a local university as a staged show of harmony, to disguise as another person and flee to neighboring Sichuan Province.

Wang Lijun had been acting as Bo's henchman in Bo's bid for higher power, but also became a political burden. It is said that Bo, sensing dangerous, decided to get rid of Wang.

Bo Xilai, the Chongqing Governor, is known for his Great Revolution style approach, which was a outlier today, even in communist China. Wang's defection is seen as a major setback for Bo's ambition for a higher post in the upcoming Party's National Conference. The 18th CCP National Conference which is expected to be held later this year will decide the Politburo, government and cabinet for the next 10 years.

Today, the office of the Chongqing Government released a brief micro-blog regarding the incident. In a literal translation, it said Wang was placed under a 'vacation-style therapy', a phrase troubled reporters from BBC and CNN alike, trying to figure out an accurate translation. After all, there was no such phrase in Chinese, never before.

9th Grader Suicide on Textbook Fees

A middle school student in Chongqing killed herself, after she couldn't pay a CNY 250 ($40) textbook fee. The student is from a poor family. The school is the Shanghe Middle School in Chongqing.

The city of Chongqing, one of four municipals along Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai, was reported to had spent CNY 270 billion ($45 billion) on a campaign to 'Sing Red Songs' in 3 years since Bo Xilai was named the Party Boss. People in Chongqing sing red songs in over 104,000 dedicated events, totaling 80 million headcounts. Everyone must participate, and they sing the red songs (revolutionary fighting songs) to other places, including tours in top theaters in Beijing. As Beijing is the official capital city of the country, Chongqing is often referred to as the 'Red Capital' due to its red song singing campaign.

If only some of the money could be used towards middle school textbook.

Chongqing Express: Cracking Down Organized Crimes

A Chongqing Party District Chief's conversation with a real estate developer was recorded and placed on the Internet. The recording, which was made on or about 15:00 on August 5, 2010, officially revealed a known secret of Chongqing's cracking down on organized crimes.

The Party Chief, Wang Yinfeng was heard asking the developer in a threatening tone, 'do you know why Chongqing cracked down on organized crime? Do you know what is organized crime? Anyone not agreeing with the government's decision will be cracked down as a criminal!' The Party Chief of Chongqing, Mr. Bo Xilai, has been making a big scene with his heavy hand approach in cracking down organized crimes in Chongqing. Bo is believed to show his ambition to higher posts, such as the Premier or Deputy Premier.

The developer was summoned to halt works on a site immediately because it interfered with the 'Feng Shui' of the district government's administration building complex. The Party Chief agreed to assign another site for compensation, but the developer was not satisfied because of the location.

The Feng Shui factor is a sensitive issue because the Communists Party does not believe in superstitious beliefs.

Wang Yinfeng was born in Henan Province. Wang received a PhD from Beijing University. Before current post as the Party Chief of the Jiangjin District of Chongqing, Wang held position such as associate staff scientist of the Henan Geography Institute of the Chinese Science Academy.

Bo Xilai is also a Beijing University graduate.

Timeline:

There are no Black Lung Patients in China

There were no homosexuals in Iran, as said the visiting Irian President Mahmound Ahmadinejad on a Columbia University forum in 2007.

There are no black lung patients in China despite the all well known work environment issues, as decided by the Chinese Comnunist Party.

A deadly struggle between seven black lung workers and the Party ended up deadly, as described in a recent story carried by the Nanfang Daily.

In the village of Dawu in Wanzhou of Chongqing, seven villagers set out to work in a factory in Wenzhou, Zhejiang in 1997. They were fired by the factory in 2002 when they were too ill to work. Seven came back with black lungs. They battled the legal system in the past five years. The result: five are already dead, and two are still not recognized as black lung patients. The Party boss of Chongqing, Mr. Bo Xilai, proudly stated that there were no black lung patients in Chongqing.

Dead bodies:
Xiang Yin,
Maochen, Qin,
Bin Xiong,
Shaojing Xiong (Bin Xiong's cousin),
Lunhua Mou,

Waiting to be dead, but not classified as black lung:

Bo Guagua Named Top Ten British Chinese

Mr. Bo Guagua, the son of the CCP Politburo member Bo Xilai, was named top ten "Big Ben" Chinese British of year 2009.

Bo Guagua was the first mainland Chinese student (the Seagull: not true) to attend famous (the Seagull: not really) Balliol College of Oxford University. After the Sichuan Earthquake, he established (the Seagull: Bo Guagua was one of the organizers) a committee which raised more than 15,000 Pounds.

Others on the list: billiards player Fu Jiajun, producer and director He Xueyi, financial analyst Meng Mingyi, financial consultant Liao Jinyang, grommet expert Huang Jingyi, fashion consultant Guk Wen, representative Cheng Deren, viloinst Chen Mei, architect Fan Tie.

Bo Xilai is a typical example of the younger Chinese communist leadership raising to top political power riding through their parents influence. Bo Xilai's father Bo Yibo was a senior official of the CCP.

Bo Guagua's life so far has been a mirror of Bo Xilai.

Chinese Soccer Team World Champion

A professional Chinese soccer team won a world championship in the 21th World Middle School Soccer Tournament held in Turkey.

The Chinese Football Association (CFA) released a statement saying although the team was actually the national professional team, but the Association had nothing to do with the game. Players participated the game 'individually', disguised themselves as students of the Chongqing Daping Middle School. Two real students of the Chongqing Daping Middle School indeed travelled with the team to Turkey, but they were never called on to play on the field.

The head coach of the national team also joined the game as a staff of the Chongqing middle school. When interviewed by a reporter in Turkey, Wu Haiyan, a professional player told him that she had no idea she was playing for the middle school even though the school name was printed on her jersey. "Coaches took care of these stuffs", said Wu.

Chines media was not shocked by the scandal of the national team presented to be a middle school team. However, people are dismayed on the close call results between the Chinese professional team and those authentic middle school teams.

Chongqing's mayor, Bo Xilai is known as a 'soccer mayor' ever since he was the mayor of Dalian, Liaoning. Bo is also a national leader, being a member of the communist party politburo. Bo is the son of late Party leader Bo Yibo.
