Chinese Students Populate US Universities

University of Southern California announced that over four thousand Chinese students were studying on their campus, based on Fall 2013 enrollment. Among which, 3,600 are from mainland China, 400 are from Taiwan, and 125 are from Hong Kong. The total number of international student population at USC is 8,500.

On the other end of the pipeline, around 7,000 Chinese obtained long term employment based visa through H1B in 2013. The total number of post-secondary Chinese students in the US exceeds 287,260 in 2013-2014 academic year (USICE). This number has doubled in five years from 128,000 since 2009-2010 academic year. The great majority of those who wish to stay in the US will have to explore options beyond high tech workers project.

According to Study Abroad Trend Report released by China Education Online, 103,427 Chinese students went to US for education. Among whom, 43.9% attended graduate schools, while 39.8% attended undergrad colleges. 23,795 Chinese students attended high schools, which reflected an increase of 366 times in eight years.

The most popular areas of study for Chinese students in the US are: Business (29%), Engineering (19.2%), Math and Computer Science (11.2%) and Social Sciences (8.2%). In the US, international students represent 3.9% of total students enrollment in the US in 2012 (OpenDoors Report).

One notable change in Chinese studying abroad is the emerging of 'international classes' in first tier cities in China. A conservative estimate put the total enrollment around 50,000 at this time. There are over 100 international classes in Beijing and about 50 in Shanghai, and various number of such classes all across China. High school students in these classes are prepared for going overseas rather than taking the National College Entrance Examination in China. They study for TOEFL, SAT, ACT, and science and humanity classes in English.

A study conducted by Xiaojie Li found the most important factors to draw Chinese students are academic quality and safety, which were followed by employment opportunities in the US after graduation. It is as interesting and important to find their school choices were not greatly influenced by the size of existing Chinese students population nor collaborative programs between the US institution and their Chinese alma mater.

Globally, Chinese students represented the top foreign students population in US, UK, Australia, Canada and Japan.

Numbers are cited from publicly available reports. Many universities with high Chinese students representation do not publish by-country enrollment data. For example, there are over 1,000 Chinese students on the main campus of Johns Hopkins University, among its 8,000 total students population. JHU is not listed in the above table because we do not have an exact official number. Similar situations include Duke University and most colleges and universities in the Boston area.

Biden Encouraged Chinese Students Stay in the US

Chinese students who were standing in snake lines in the US Embassy in Beijing waiting for visa interview were surprised by an upbeat Biden and his inspiring impromptus speech, in which the Vice President of the United States urged Chinese students to stay in the US.

Obvious in a good spirit, Biden thanked the applicants for their effort for the US opportunities. He told students that he hope they would decided to stay once they arrived in the US. He also promised to arrange a reunion in Washington.

What's ironic is that for students seeking an F-1 student visa to study in the US university, the predominant condition and the No. 1 reason for visa rejection is that they must demonstrate they would not stay in the US. By law, if a student shows any sign of likelihood of not returning to China once his study completes, the visa officer must deny the visa application. It would be interesting if any of the students actually told the visa officer that he would follow Biden's advice.

In addition, the Beijing Embassy did not handle visa. All immigration visa applicants must apply in Guangzhou.

Chinese Student Extradited to the US

Tim Tse was a student studying for a Master's degree at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee in January 2006, when he allegedly sexually assaulted a female student H.Y.T. from Taiwan.

Tse was arrested at a border crossing when he was traveling to mainland from Hong Kong in January 2013. The Chinese authority contacted the US when his name triggered an alarm on computer screen. Tse was sent back to Hong Kong from where he was extradited to the US. Although there was no extradition agreement between the US and China, there is such agreement between Hong Kong and the US.

According to the police, Tse, having his face covered with a ski mask, broke in the 26 years old victim's residence on S Riverwood Blvd where she was sleeping at the time and drugged her by placing a soaked rag soaked with a toxic chemical over her mouth. Tse then showered her and forced a pill down her throat. The woman was beat and raped. Tse also took photos of the naked victim.

The woman was not able to name a suspect, but Tse contacted the police one week later. Tse initially admitted to police that he was angry with the woman for a variety of reasons and wanted to take nude photos and posted them online to humiliate her. Tse then claimed he was not provided proper legal advice, and tried to suppress the confession.

Tse was arrested and charged with second degree sexual assault and burglary on Nov 14, 2006. He was assigned a public defender, being indigent; however, managed to post a bond of $100,000 in cash the same day. Tse's girlfriend posted the bond on Nov 16 with money wired by Tse's family. Tse boarded a United flight to Hong Kong at O'Hare in Chicago on Nov 19.

Wisconsin v. Tim Tse, 2006CF006108

This time, Tse's bond was set at $5 million. On Oct 22, 2013, Tse pled guilty on Burglary. The court dismissed Secual Assault charge.

Tse's next court appearance will be on Dec 6, 2013. Tse is represented by Dean A. Strang, who has extensive trial experience including in the SCOTUS.

A April 16, 2007 youtube video claimed Tim Tse was from Shanghai, China. Court record also showed Tse claimed he was a native Mandarin speaker. However, based on the way the name is spelled, the Seagull is positive that he must not be from the mainland. Hong Kong is possible, though. Charles Stone, the victim's friend and a lawyer, said Tse was a Chinese citizen. On the other hand, towards the end of the video, the news anchor said the at large Tse could be on an airplane to Hong Kong.

When Tse was apprehended and brought back to the US a few months ago, local TV station FOX6 proclaimed that regardless the result of the trial, Tse would be registered as a secual offender for the rest of his life. It did not go that way.

Update: Franklin Now has a detailed recount of the saga:

According to the 2006 criminal complaint and Franklin Police Department police reports:

The attack occurred in the woman's apartment in the 6900 block of South Riverwood Boulevard between Nov. 4 and 5, 2006. The victim, who was 26 at the time, told police she was sleeping in her bed when a man placed a rag containing some sort of chemical over her mouth, hit her and choked her several times. He pulled off her pajama bottoms and underwear and fondled her underneath her pajama top.

The woman told police that during this time she saw flashes, which led her to believe the man was taking pictures of her while she was partly nude.

The man then took her into the bathroom and placed her in the shower, where he tied her up, placed a towel over her face and attempted to force a pill down her throat. She spit the pill into the shower when she heard the man leave the room, and when he returned he dragged her by her shoulders and hair back into the bedroom, where he left her lying on the floor.

The victim stated that she was lightheaded and dizzy, and went in and out of consciousness several times during the attack.

After the man left her bedroom, the woman grabbed her cellphone and dialed 911. Officers found the woman lying on her bedroom floor, shaking uncontrollably, with a towel covering the bottom portion of her body. The Franklin Fire Department took her to the hospital for evaluation and treatment.

About a week after the incident, police received a call from the victim's boyfriend, who stated that Tse had just confessed to attacking the woman.

"I guess he was feeling some pangs of guilt after the attack," Spak said, "so he decided to tell the victim's boyfriend, who then called us."

When questioned by police, Tse, who was dating the victim's roommate at the time, told officers he was angry at the victim for a variety of reasons that he never explained and planned the attack out of revenge, according to the criminal complaint. He stated he wanted to take pictures of the victim without her clothes on and post them on the Internet to humiliate her.

Franklin detectives later searched Tse's home in the 1600 block of North Prospect Avenue in Milwaukee, where they seized all computers, hard drives, monitors, storage disks, CDs and DVDs, along with any cameras or chemicals. However, police never found any pictures or video of the victim, police reports state.

"He never actually posted the pictures on the Internet, or did anything else with them," Spak said. "To our knowledge he destroyed the camera, and all the photos along with it."

Tse admitted to entering the woman's home using her roommate's key, and using a chemical-soaked rag to render her unconscious. He also admitted to groping the victim because he wanted to scare her and "make her believe she was going to be sexually assaulted," and to taking pictures of her in various stages of undress, according to the complaint.

It goes on to state that Tse told police he stole several items before leaving the apartment because he believed it would be better for him if he made the incident look more like a burglary.

Their Sorrow Shadowed by their Glory: Chinese Graduate Students in the US

A recent article looked into 16,000 PhD graduate students in 161 US chemistry departments, and showed that Chinese students outperformed their peers and were as well as awardees of the NSF doctoral fellowship program, in terms of scientific contributions (Patrick Gaule, Chinese Graduate Students and US Scientific Productivity, The Review of Economics and Statistics, Vol. 95, No. 2, Pages 698-701, May 2013). The study for the first time confirmed with scientific methods what people in the field had long known.

On the other hand, without green card on a short visa (shorter than most international students), and surrounded in sometimes unfriendly working environment with uncertain in their future life, the sorrow of Chinese graduate students had long been overlooked.

They have to battle with discrimination from those privileged and resentment from the bottom, and often take the least paid job, in additional to battling with a often conflicting culture. Systematic repression is abundant, too. In some labs, a Chinese student will be paired up with an American student, with the Chinese student works the work, and the US student press the button when it is necessary due to regulations put into place to prevent foreigners using certain lab equipments. In other occasion, Chinese are the only nationals who are forbidden from working in certain field. Many had quietly complained unable to graduate while being exploited as academic slavery, other were threatened of retaliation the moment they found a job offer.

With the rise of China economy, it should not be a surprise to see more Chinese graduate students returning to China, at the same time while less top level students coming the US, if the trend continues.

Chinese Student Arrested After Forked Female Chinese Student on Nose

Deng Chenxi, 22 year old, was arrested by Austin Police Department late night Wednesday. Deng stabbed a Chinese student in the Engineering Science Building with a 'fork'. The fork was struck onto the female student's nose. The student was initially treated by an EMT on the scene, then transferred to St. David's Medical Center. According to University of Texas, Deng was not a student at UT.

A witness Priscilla Chang said she saw a girl was bleeding and Deng being restrained on the ground by a group of students, "I saw the guy being pinned down by a few other guys, and he was going nuts... He was yelling some crazy stuff, but I couldn't really tell what it was - he seemed incoherent. He was fighting the guys trying to hold him down."

Information posted on MITBBS indicated that Deng was from Xinjiang and graduated from Beijing University. Deng's parents had been looking for Deng for days. He went to UT to visit a friend You Li last weekend, but did not return on time.

LinkedIn in shows Li You graduated from Beijing University with a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering in 2012. Li was enrolled in a Master Degree in Integrated Circuits and Systems in 2012 at UT. She interned at Freescale Semiconductor.

January 21, 2009, Virginia Tech, Chinese student Zhu Haiyang decapitated a female Chinese student Yang Xin at Au Bon Pain cafe with a kitchen knife in front of dozens of horrified patrons of the on campus cafe.

Update: Daily Texan has confirmed that the name of the female student is You Li.

Update: Police has confirmed the incident took place when a romantic relationship went sour. According to police, Chen followed all the way from China to track down his ex-girlfriend in a classroom after having audited multiple UT classes. The duo started an argument. According to police affidavit, Deng claimed that he forked the female student after being punched in face.

You's roommate Hongjiang Li said she was with You in a class on Wednesday night. She described how You had been trying to stay away from Chen, after Chen entered the classroom before class started. After class, You left to the hallway, and Chen followed.

Chilling Details in Vassar College Discrimination Case Against Chinese Students

It could sound worse than we had already heard in the case we reported a few days back, a story in which a promising Chinese student was expelled from Vassar College because of a consensual sexual relationship between the Chinese student and a white female student.

But as they always say, devils are in the details. If the summary sentence is shocking, the details in the legal complaint is desperately depressing.

Peter Yu picked Vassar over other schools where he had gained admission, including Wesleyan College, Bates College and Carnegie Mellon University. A big mistake he should regret in the rest of his life. With his 98% SAT, 4.19 GPA, numerous accolades in scholastic and athletic, 9 credits AP, only sky is the limit. Today, Yu has nowhere to go, with his record forever ruined by the expulsion with a serious sexual accusation.

After the night of sexual encounter between the two, which was clearly consensual based on the facts listed in the lawsuit, including witnesses accounts and, most damaging, text messages between the two in the year after that night, the duo continued to row together and see each other. A few month later, Walker invited Yu for a family dinner.

No one knows for sure what made the female student decided to press charge against Yu on non-consensual sex offense over one year later out of blue. However, what Vassar College did after that makes everyone who read through the complaint speechless.

Vassar College went out of its way to make sure Peter Yu suffer for no reason. The College denied calling witnesses. Vassar College against its own bylaw, denied having a student sitting in the hearing panel upon Yu's request. Vassar College hid evidence (testimonies from Yu's roommate who saw Walker having sex with Yu and Walker's roommate who was called by Walker to arrange a place for the sex) and refused to admit the most important evidence, those text messages exchanged between the two. Vassar College refused to allow Yu to question Walker in the hearing. To top all of these appalling discriminating actions, Vassar falsified its own procedures and expelled Yu on Section 20.2, which he was never charged with. Yu was charge with Section 20.1 and all the hearings were about Section 20.1.

By all accounts, if one shred of the evidence alleged in the complaint were true, Vassar College must still live in 1840, the peak of segregation. Vassar College's persecution against Yu, a Chinese student who had consensual sex with a white female, resembles nothing but a lynching out of hatred and ignorance.

Where are Chinese ambassador and consul generals? Where are the Chinese community leaders in New York? Where are Chinese media?

While the spokesperson of Vassar College bragged about its legal mighty, a real lawsuit outside the US in a fair court, where laws are followed and evidence are allowed to be presented will show its true color to the entire world, including to people in the US. Chinese should welcome a lawsuit in Peter Yu's hometown Dalian, China or in Beijing since it's an international case.

Vassar College probably could care less on media exposure in China. With its over $800 million endowment, it has more financial power to skip China. Perhaps it calculates that it may appeal to donors of white extremists by making its case with Peter Yu, and build its financial model upon this view.

The female student named in the lawsuit, Ms. Mary Claire Walker, remains a student at Vassar College. A male white student, who is not named and who was actually accused of Section 20.2 three months earlier, remains a student at Vassar College.

Chinese Student Expelled by Vassar College Sued for Discrimination

The New York Post reported that a Chinese student from Dalian Xiaolu 'Peter' Yu was expelled by Vassar College after a white student Mary Claire Walker accused him of rape.

Yu said the College was wrong, and his recollection of the incident was: on the night of Feb 18, 2012, the two teammates of the Vassar College rowing team were at a team party. The two agreed to have sex after the party, and they did.

For unknown reason, one year later, Walker informed school officials that Yu raped her that night. Vassar College expelled Yu on Walker's words.

Yu claimed the sex was 'clearly consensual' because:

  • Walker called her roommate to find out whether they could have sex at her dorm room, and when it was not an option, they walked together to Yu's room.
  • Walker assured Yu, a virgin at the time, that she knew 'what to do', and started by performing oral sex on him. Then she put a condom on him, before the two conducted intercourse.
  • When Yu's roommate returned, Walker made a comment on how she 'took Peter Yu's virginity' before dressed and left.
  • The next day, Walker sent Yu a message through Facebook saying she 'had a wonderful time'.

Having had his life dismantled at age 20, Yu filed a complaint in Manhattan federal court against Vassar College on grounds of discrimination.

One picture featured on Walker's Facebook cover page was a word expansion of her own name: "Mad, Adorable, Romantic, Young, Crazy, Lethal, Adorable, Innocent, Rich", along a quote from Walt Disney, "It's kind of fun to do the impossible'.

A spokesman for Vassar College indicated that attorneys of the school had provided 'strong legal ground'. Vassar has an endowment over $800 million.

Unlike peer elite liberal arts colleges which are often found crowded with foreign students, less than 10% of Vassar's student population comes from overseas. Perhaps, there was a reason. But probably, it no longer matters. This lawsuit looks really bad for the small rural college in upstate New York. Most likely, the name had already been crossed out by many college shopping parents from non-white families, by now.

Yale President's 20 China Trips and Some Thoughts on Small Colleges

When Richard C Levin left his tenure as the President of Yale, he left a legacy of a best time in Yale's history. Among the many things he will be remembered, '20' is the amount of trips he made to China since 2001.

There is no dispute that Chinese students had become the largest source of revenue increase for US colleges. A fast had long known by their peers in Singapore, Australia and Canada and England. Anyone who could not see this by now already missed the boat, unfortunately. It is especially fatal for small colleges. A few years back, Chinese students went to no name colleges in fly over states such as Kansas and North Dakota. Today they are increasingly aware of options and alternatives. Those who had not built a foundation with Chinese students must face fierce competition with major universities and elite colleges.

Many independent colleges are struggling to attract local students, not aware of the fading away of opportunities for survival. Although the gloomy economy plays a factor, but the real threat to independent colleges is their refusing to adjust to students need.

Liberal arts curricula is not marketable. Progressive professors still have the chance to smuggle their ideology in the college experience, but they need to package it with a job oriented approach. Alas, many small colleges are working the opposite way: market a vocational education curricula in a package with label of liberal arts.

Chinese Talent Died of Suicide

A gifted Chinese engineer hanged himself in his own garage on April 6, 2012, according to online report.

Qinggen Wang was a principle engineer at PayPal, a company often known for good benefits and low work pressure.

Wang was a star even before he entered College, when he earned a Gold Medal in Chemistry Olympiad held in Paris in 1990. Chinese President Jiang Zeming and Premier Li Peng met with the winning group.

After graduated from Nanjing University with a B.S. in Chemistry, Wang continue to earn a PhD in Chemistry from Stanford University in 2001 and a Master's Degree in Computer Science. In nine years at PayPal, Wang climbed his way up to Principle Software Engineer. An online ID hodge80 posted a message at 10:32 on April 29, 2009 that he/she heard from the No. 3 County Hospital that Wang developed mental illness in the US. Another ID xiaosanzi007 echoed a few hours later that he/she also heard of that rumor.

Wang is survived by his wife and two kids, age 10 and 7.

An online ID posted on Huaren that Wang's depression was a result of work pressure, and that Wang's boss was very rude.

One poster 'linuxbeginer' of MITBBS said his boss was an Indian. Another poster 'frid' of HUAREN indicated his boss was said to be a Chinese. Other posters confirmed his boss being a Chinese, who joined Paypal a few years later than Wang.

Co-workers and friends remember Wang as an 'extremely' nice person, who never hesitate to offer a hand to anyone who asks.

Mainstream Media in the USA Spin Over Death of Chinese Students

There is not a Central Propaganda Department in the United States, but the thoughts and conducts of the mainstream media often puzzle Chinese who came from a regime which does have one. It seems a mission of this Department of Propaganda of the USA is to demonize Chinese.

Two Chinese students, were fatally shot near USC campus. Ying Wu and Ming Qu, both 23 year old, were graduate students studying electrical engineering.

The mainstream media in the US reported the incident, with a few spins. Associated Press, Television stations FOX News, WSBT and KTLA, and print media San Francisco Chronicle alike reported described a 'brand new $60,000 BMW' double parking in front of the woman's house after midnight. US media painted the tragedy as irresponsible wealthy kids who forgot safety rules and ignored time.

The truth is, as recounted by a classmate, the two students were working on a group research project due in two weeks for class EE586L Advanced DSP Laboratory at Building EEB B10. The car is a 2002 BMW 3 series bought used at $12,000, a typical graduate student car. The girl shared a tiny apartment with another student at $500 a month each. She often rode bicycle back from the lab, although this time she got a ride from the boy.

Update: LAPD announced that two suspects had been arrested with link to this case. Twenty year-old Bryan Barnes and nineteen year-old Javier Bolden, both African American, were arrested by a task force of LAPD, FBI and ATF on Jan 17, 2013.

Kansas State University Student Newspaper Publish Hate Speech Towards Chinese Students on Campus

Kansas State University's Kansas State Collegian published an article authored by a staff writer Sean Frye regarding on campus population of international students from 'enemy' states, which include Afghanistan, China, Iran and Turkey.

The article made some factual error in its findings. For example, it alleges 'taxpayer's money', as large as $6.9 million in a year, was used to educate students from countries that have 'outwardly said they do not appreciate the U.S.'. On the contrary, foreign students pay at a much higher tuition, which is essential and instrumental at the time being to sustain the higher education systems in the State of Kansas. As a matter of fact, that was the reason local resident could afford to go to colleges.

The article fell short of calling foreign students on campus at Kansas State University spies, but indeed pointed out that these students 'could take the knowledge they obtained back to a country that the U.S. does not get along with.'

The article pointed out that on campus at KSU, 938 students come from China. It then proclaimed China will 'undoubtedly become enemies of the U.S.' The author concluded with a statement that 'taxpayer money should not be spent to educate students who could in the near future become the enemy'.

By citing wrong data, after applying wrong logic, this article successfully created a hostile environment for a group of students to study and work on campus at Kansas State University. These students were targeted on one factor, that is their origin of country.

The Kansas State Collegian is the campus students newspaper endorsed and sponsored by the Kansas State University through office space contribution and redistribution of student activity fees, among other financial resources provided by the University. The daily publication is distributed throughout the campus. Because of its wide circulation across KSU campus, it is the ninth largest daily newspaper in the entire State of Kansas. Based on Hazelwood School District v. Kuhlmeier and Hosty v. Carter, KSU as the endorser and sponsor, as well as the educators and the administration of the campus, may have a duty of prior review of this widely distributed publication. However, inaction by the Kansas State University administration is not a relief on the duty of the editorial board of the Kansas State Collegian.

The Kansas State Collegian advocated and spread hatred against foreign students, including Chinese students by the publication and circulation of this article authored by a staff writer, both in printed form and as an online edition. Chinese students who are studying at the Kansas State University are targeted exclusively because of their national origin. The publication and wide circulation of this article on the Kansas State Collegian created an intimidating, hostile and offensive academic environment on campus of the Kansas State University. The publication and circulation of this article constitutes a distraction and obstacles for Chinese students to continue their study in classroom and on campus of the Kansas State University.

The Seagull recommend this advocate and spreading of hatred towards a group of students because of their national origin be investigated by the Kansas State University. The University has an obligation to report this rare but severe incident of discriminatory harassment incidence to the Office of Civil Rights of the United States Department of Education. The Seagull also recommend the faculty Self-Study group to include this incidents in their Self-Study Report to be presented to the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) of the North Central Association during their upcoming site visit on April 9-11, 2012.

Public universities should not accept students from countries that have bad relations with US

By Sean Frye staff writer
Published: Friday, February 24, 2012
Updated: Sunday, February 26, 2012 13:02

Here on campus, there are currently 1,851 international students, consisting of 1,045 undergraduates and 717 graduate students, according to the International Student and Scholar Services page on K-State's website. During the fall 2011 semester, there were 1,856 international students. Of that number, 972 students were from Afghanistan, China, Iran, Iraq or Turkey. China had the highest number of students, with 938.

What stands out about those five countries is that the United States does not have good relations with any of those nations.

So why does K-State, or any other university in the country, willingly choose to spend money on resources to educate students who could take the knowledge they obtained back to a country the U.S. does not get along with?

Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq are not allies with the U.S. for reasons surrounding the war on terror as well as problems before that, dating back to before the Gulf War. China and its communist regime has always had a rocky relationship with the U.S. and Turkey's relationship with the U.S. has deteriorated due to Turkey's displeasure with the Iraq War.

It is disappointing to know that, while international students are an integral presence on campus, 52 percent of them come from a country that has outwardly said they do not appreciate the U.S.

According to the K-State 2011-12 fiscal year budget, which can be found on K-State's website, K-State receives $161.8 million in state appropriations and $9.4 million in federal land-grant funds.

In those two categories alone, the university receives $171.2 million in tax dollars from the state of Kansas and the U.S. government.

In the fall of 2011, there were 23,863 students enrolled at K-State. Divide the total dollar amount evenly by the number of students and that shows that just over $7,000 in government funding is being spent to educate an individual student on campus.

Multiply that by 972, and that equals out to $6.9 million. That means nearly $7 million in government funding is spent to educate international students from nations that are not friendly with the U.S.

Debates rage on as to whether China is an adversary to the U.S. or not. Simply put, though, for as long as China remains under communist rule, it will be under the careful watch of the American government. In an April 30, 2011, article by Paul Kix on The Daily Beast website, the International Monetary Fund projects that China will have the world's largest economy and will be the next world superpower by 2016.

If a world superpower is under a communist regime, then they will undoubtedly become enemies of the U.S. The Cold War, Vietnam War and Korean War were all based on stopping the spread of communism.

Do not get it twisted, I am not saying people from these countries or the students here at K-State from these countries are all evil or should be treated as such.

I had a conversation with Patrick Sweeney, head women's rowing coach, who is from Great Britain. He said in his travels around the world, he learned that people are virtually the same everywhere and have the same basic goals, and I can respect that.

My argument is that they shouldn't have been allowed to come here and study at a public university that receives government funds.

We cannot control the agenda of private universities, as they set their own agendas.

And quite frankly, they have the right to because they fund themselves. But public universities like K-State should not be allowed to educate students from a country which the U.S. has bad relations with, and legislation should be passed that dictates such.

I have nothing against citizens from Afghanistan, China, Iran, Iraq or Turkey. I just truly believe that nearly $7 million of taxpayer money should not be spent to educate students who could, in the near future, become the enemy.

One More Death of Chinese Students in a Kansas College

Emporia State University was a regional public institute, with an 'average' international population composition among its peers in Kansas.

Last October, it has been hit with a disproportional high share of tragedies when two Chinese students, Fan Yawei and Lin Zheng, were found dead of house fire. Fan and Lin came to ESU in Fall 2009 and fell in love. The duo planned to return China to get married.

There was no smoke detector installed in the apartment they rent from Mr. Tony Wang the owner of a restaurant where Lin worked part time. Police determined the cause of fire was combustibles being placed too close to a floor furnace.

Life hardship was evident. On the night of fire, it was 25 degrees outside. Yet that was the first night in the winter the furnace was turned on in the apartment building shared by Chinese students. Fan sometimes made money by taking international students who didn't have cars to the airport.

The tragedy made its strike before anyone could realize what was happening. The furnace was turned on around 11 pm. Life was as normal when Lin made a call to her friend at about 11:20 pm. Before midnight, Ms. Cang Lan, a tenant living downstairs smelled smoke. She was about to call the fire department, but a passer-by told her he already did. She also knocked on the doors of Fan and Lin, but there was no response. knowing the couple was taking students to the airport, she thought they had already left.

According to department log, the fire department received a call at 12:18 and arrived at 12:22 am. Lin was brought out naked and life-flighted to Wichita, where she would die a few hours later. Fan was found dead at the scene.

Police reported another student Yang Alex Mingxuan was found dead in a car at a crash scene on January 10, 2012. Initial report was not clear on the cause of death. Later it was said, a call was made to the 911, in which the caller alerted the police a traffic accident. When police reached the alleged crash scene just after 4 pm, they found Yang in a crashed car with a gunshot wound. They also found a note, which appears to be a transcript of the previous 911 call. Police decided Yang must have made the call himself, reading from the note. Then Yang drove to the pre-determined location, fired a shot to himself and crashed the car.

All three students came from Dalian, Liaoning Province in Northeastern China. Fan and Lin came to the US through an exchange program with Liaoning Normal University in Dalian. Fan was a sophomore in Chemistry, Lin was a graduate student in English. Yang transferred to ESU from University of North Texas in Denton, and was working on MBA program. Yang was involved with the Chinese Students Association and attended services at the 12th Ave Baptist Church and also at First Presbytarian at the 12th Ave.

Chinese media reported Yang had been under economic pressure. He worked at restaurants, but later quit because of hardship of the work.

Over 200 Chinese students study in Emporia State University.

What would link Emporia State University the Dickinson State University is a Disney program, which was highly criticized for the chaos in the state college in North Dakota where 400 Chinese students were admitted without proper background and subsequently awarded degrees without meeting required academic standards.

Among the regional Regents Universities in Kansas, ESU was about average in terms of international students composition. Its sister school, the Fort Hays State University (FHSU) boasts a 36% of international students population. FHSU became the first American University to offer dual bachelor's degrees in China, and started offering courses through partner schools since 2000. According to FHSU official websites, in Fall 2009, FHSU is serving 3200 students at partner schools in China. However, a Wikipedia page indicated that 'to date, no one international students at SIAS has earned the FHSU degree,' FHSU's main partner in China.

Dean Found Dead in a State University Charged on Fraud

Douglas LaPlante, the Dean of College of Education, Business and Applied Sciences of Dickinson State University in North Dakota was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound Friday February 10, 2012.

The Dickinson State university is ranked 63rd in the Midwest Region by US News & World Report. With an undergraduate enrollment of 2,668 and an endowment of $10 million, the public university has been seen struggling with shrinking state funding, which was compounded by a booming local oil industry that drew high school graduates away. Its four year graduation rate is 12%.

Hours earlier on the same day, the university made public the result of an audit which confirmed accusation that many students had been awarded degrees before completed their course study. Of 410 degrees granted to Chinese students in the past four years, 400 of them did not meet qualifications to graduate. In addition, of 144 degrees granted to Russian students in the same period, none meets graduation standards. The program at issue is titled 'Join, Top Up and Disney'. International students were promised an US degree after 6 months of Disney experience and 7 months of on campus study.

LaPlante was a strong supporter for the University's Confucius Institute, a Chinese cultural center fully funded by the Chinese government. Dickinson officials announced on Wednesday evening that they would scrap a plan to implement the Institute. A Chinese representative from partner school Taiyuan University of Technology, Professor Mei Hao, will pack and go.

More Chinese Students Came to the US Last Year

113.8 thousands F-1 visas were issued to (mainland) Chinese students in FY2010, a significant growth from 81.8 thousands of FY2009 and 56.3 thousands of FY2008. In addition, 27.7 thousands J-1 visas and 1.4 thousands M-1 visas were issued. F-1 visa is issued to full-time students; J-1 is issued to exchange students and scholars; M-1 is for short term visiting students.

Among Chinese students in the US, about 31% are undergraduate students and about 52% are graduate students. Chinese students is the largest group among foreign students in the US.

19 million students were enrolled in colleges in the US at the time, including part time students. Booming Chinese economy, housing price in particular, has made US education very affordable for many Chinese families. For example, a typical apartment in Beijing worth about $1 million, and most city residents had acquired their resident 10 years ago while they were dirty cheap. Many had multiple houses as investment. It is expected that 300 million more farmers will rush to cities in next few years, thus continuously pushing the housing market to new high.

Onlien Discovery May Incriminalize Husband of Hiking Accident Victism

Chinese student Yin, Jing and her labmate a US student were killed in a hiking accident when the two were traveling in Jiuzhigou, China, a famous tourism location.

Days after the accident, while relatives and friends were still mourning for their lost, some people pointed out suspicious leads that suggest it might be a murder case. Yin's jealous husband who is in school in another state in the US was alleged to have hired a hit man to kill the duo because of extramarital affairs.

1) The husband has the motive. Yin dutifully kept updating a blog where she elaborate every details of her daily life since 2005. However, not even once was her husband mentioned in her thousands of blogs.

2) The American student could be seen in many photos Yin posted on the web. The facial expression suggested intimate relationship between the two.

3) Although Yin created her MSN Live blog when she was a married woman, she listed 'many people' as her 'significant other' in her online profile.

4) The husband made a lonely trip back to China in June, 2009.

5) Yin revealed in her blog on July 16, 2009 that her own mother was against her travel plan. She said she had been hiding the trip from her mother.

6) Someone from Mianyang, Sichuan (IP: 125.67.157.*) posted online requesting Yin's pictures and descriptions on August 10, 2009. Mianyang is the closest city to the scene of the fatal accident.

7) September 3rd, 2009. The duo were found killed by 'falling rocks'.

8) September 5th, 2009. Someone questioned the motive behind the inquiry made on August 10, 2009.

9) There is little to none media coverage in mainland on the accidental death of one American and one oversea Chinese students in China. These type of incidents are always big media hit. It's hard to imagine this is not intentionally handled by the police due to ongoing criminal investigation.

More Chinese Students Assaulted in Australia

More Chinese were assaulted in Australia. Four Chinese students were assaulted near the Gold Coast in Queensland Australia. Inspired by Victorian Supreme Court Justice David Harper's rent ruling that the maximum jail time for white killing Chinese was 10 years, Asian hunters are mobilized on Australian streets to act out their holy duty.

Asian students are ripen target for white Australian. Besides Chinese, Indian are also attacked in mass scale. Unlike their quiet Chinese counterparts, Indian leaders are vocal to condemn the barbarian violence in disgust. On June 9, 2009, Indian Prime Minister said he was appalled by the senseless violence and crime, some of which are racist in nature. Indian students launched mass protest in Melbourne (5/31/2009) and Sydney (6/7-10/2009), as well as in front of the Australian Embassy in New Delhi.

Bollywood's largest labor union declared that its members would boycott Australia until it stopped encouraging on white residents to assault on Indian student. Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan turned on an Honorable doctorate from the Queensland University of Technology.

The Chinese Ambassador to Australia Mr. Zhang Junsai, however, refused to make comment on the handling of racial hate crimes by the Australian authorities. "If a Chinese citizen loves China, he should have stayed within the boundary of China, rather than coming to the Australia," Mr. Zhang said. He added, "If a Chinese consciously chose not to stay in his motherland in China, then he is not a loyal Chinese, and should be punished."

Australian is such an amazing species. With a 92% white population, one in five claimed to be a victim of racist abuse, according to an 11-year study into racism in Australia by a collaboration of Australian universities. Go figure.

Applications from China Grow

According to a report of the Council of Graduate Schools, Chinese applications jump 16% over last year, despite a slowing down global economy. The overall applications number grows a mere 3%. However, the applications from India and South Korea declined by 9% and 7%, respectively. China, India and South Korea sent most graduate students to the US.

More applications are going to universities with higher concentration of existing international students populations. The top ten universities of international students see an increase of 7%, while those below 100th in this ranking see a drop of 4%.
