Xi's Anti-Corruption Campaign Delivered Alarming Messages

Xi's anti-corruption campaign delivered alarming messages to his political rivals.

There are two distinctive patterns that were largely skipped public attention. 1) Only those 'lined up in the wrong queue' were crushed by the campaign. 2) The total number of senior officials that were sacked in the campaign was actually less than his predecessor, despite the perception of the public.

In other words, the anti-corruption arm of the CCP was converted to a political branch to deter any dissenting voices from within the CCP.

In separate threads, Xi spoke at a judicial panel, when he made the following statement: there are cases that are obvious in a layman's eyes, but unnecessarily complicated by intricacies of laws.

Red Flag (Hongqi) Magazine echoed Xi's words by claiming a judicial system can not replace dictatorship of the proletariat.

President Xi's most recent stunt was his talk at a panel of arts and literature. Xi summoned the most well known writers and entertainers in the country, and told them "arts and literature should not be enslaved by what the markets demand". The undertone is that they should submit themselves to the benefit of politics.

Building Up An Espionage Case

It took over two years of police work to build up an espionage charge against six individuals who alleged stole agricultural secrets for a Chinese Conglomerate DBN.

Hailong Robert Mo was found kneeing in an unmarked corn field near Tama, Iowa digging freshly planted seeds, with a getaway car waiting, on May 3, 2011. A field manager of DuPont Pioneer questioned Mo, but he was able to get away fast. The car's license plate was traced back to Mo. Monsanto also reported suspicious activity. FBI agents were alerted during a routine site visit on June 30, 2011. An investigation was initiated in September 2011.

It turned out a team of 'Asian males' had been travelling extensively through Midwestern farm belt states, visiting farmers who had been contracted with seeds companies DuPont, Monsanto and LG to plant bio-engineered corns. Mo would be stopped again four months later checking out an unmarked Monsanto test field by Polk County (Iowa) Sheriff's Deputy.

In February 2012, FBI was expecting Mo to accompany visiting Chinese leader Xi Jinping on an agricultural tour but could not locate Mo by surveillance they set up at the Des Moines airport. Later, FBI was notified by Pioneer security team that Mo was found at their headquarters with the tour, using an assumed name of Wu Hougang, Chairman of Dalian Zhangzidao Fishery Group. FBI was able to locate Mo several hours later in a tour of a Monsanto facility in Ankeny, Iowa. Later that evening, Mo attended the state dinner hosted by the Iowa Governor for Xi. The next day, Mo would attend an agriculture conference with the same assumed name Wu. Mo was seen meeting with former Pioneer employee whose wife was an active Pioneer corn geneticist researcher.

FBI recorded a revealing conversation between two DBN employees Ye Jian and Lin Young, when they were traveling in a rental car in the US.
Ye: You can forget about ever coming to the US again... Isn't that ruining an individual's future?
Lin: I don't think it's that simple. I actually studied the law.
Ye: They could treat us as spies.
Lin: Trespassing, theft/larceny, IP. All criminal offences... not just blocking us from visiting.
Lin: Dr. Li actually knows clearly, he knows. When the seed operation was launched, he was in charge of the legal side.
Lin: My family just has no clue what I am doing here. My oldman asked me what you guys are doing staying in the US for so long? What can I say? Can't say anything.
Lin: I don't really want to come to the US anyway.
Ye: So [sigh]. The company can't afford the legal cost.
Lin: Taking things from the property is theft... Nowadays the US is very hostile to China on this matter. If this time they opt to -
Ye: [Deep sigh]
Lin: I mentioned it to Dr. Li that I don't agree on running this project for such a long time.
Ye: The longer the time is, the more likely we get in trouble.
Lin: My point is that the outcome doesn't justify the effort we put in. We take such a huge risk, for such a long time, just to get some duplicates. From decision-making standpoint, I think it's not. Dr. Li's personality tends to go extreme.

FBI observed a meeting of Mo, Ye, Li and 'Hongwei Wang' September 2012. US Border Patrol found in checked bags of luggage of Ye and Li to China what appears to be factory-sealed microwave popcorn boxes. Upon opening the boxes, on top were popcorn package, but inside each box were approximately 100 small manila envelops with corn seeds. USCBP found additional napkins with corn seeds in Ye's pockets when Ye was awaiting for his flight. Approximately the same time, Boarder Patrol at a Canadian border found 44 bags of corn seeds in Hongwei's car hidden under his seat and in his luggage. Hundreds of pictures of corn fields and Monsanto and Pioneer tours were found in Hongwei's digital camera.

The criminal complaint was violation of 1832 (theft of intellectual property). The case was US v. Mo on trial in the Southern District of Iowa 4:2013-cr-00147-RP-CFB-002. Mo pleaded not guilty.

DBN is a publicaly traded company at Shenzhen Exchange with a market value of 25.66 billion RMB ($4 billion). The Chairperson of DBN is Mr. Shao Genhuo, a self-made billionaire with a net worth of $1.45 billion (#90 China Rich List).

Beijing Recognizes Underground Jails

In a press conference today, the deputy director of the National Petition Bureau Mr. Li Gao was asked to comment on the underground jails scattered around the Bureau. Local governments set up these underground jails to detain appelees who come to Beijing to petition their mistreatment by local governments before they could be transferred back. By letters of current law, this is illegal.

Mr. Li Gao stated, these petitioners were detained when they conducted "illegal petition", therefore, they were not under protection of law.

Mr. Li's comment was puzzling in many ways. First of all, what conducts would make petitioning to the National Petition Bureau 'illegal'? Secondly, regardless of what these petitioners were doing in Beijing, how could local governments from other provinces jail them in Beijing without going through any judicial procedure? Also, what are the legal arguments for local government to set up secret jails in Beijing?

Billionaire and civil activist Mr. Wang Gongquan was arrested this summer. Mr. Wang visited the underground jails in a winter night earlier this year and demand releasing of the detainees. Mr. Wang was charged with disturbance order.

On a separate note, domestic techie tycoons lessoned Party leadership how to make use of Internet technology. Zhongguancun, September 30, a Robin Yanhong Li in a full white suits, founder and CEO of Baidu the Chinese search engine, briefed Xi Jinping the concept of Big Data and applications into social management, such as online surveillance of public events.

Starbucks' Trouble Might Have Been Planted One Year Ago

In the past few days, Starbucks have been under heavy bombardment from the propaganda branch CCTV. The official national television station blamed Starbucks for charging higher price in China. The TV program claimed that Starbucks charge a high price of $4.5 for a cup of Latte while the cost of coffee and milk was only $0.80.

Starbucks quickly responded that the material cost only contributed 18% of the price, and that there were other cost involved. In particular, Starbuck said, customers in China used to stay in the coffee shop longer than those in the west, thus increased expenses in store lease.

Customers in China reacted overwhelmingly in favor of Starbuck. The next day, many Starbucks stores find long line of customers waiting for a cup of coffee, partially in support of the coffee store, partially as a public defiance to the Propaganda mouthpiece.

Professor Wang Ye of University of Pittsburgh at Bradford suggested that Starbucks' trouble might had been planted when their CEO Howard Schultz visited China in April 2012. It was believed former Chinese President Jiang's influences were severely diminished at the once-a-decade power transition in March. Jiang's successor Hu Jintao announced that he would withdraw from decision-making entirely to pass the power to new President Xi Jinping. It was viewed as a public humiliation to Jiang's effort to stay in power even after he stepped down from the top position in China in 2003.

Jiang reacted with a news of his meeting with the visiting Schultz to reassure his base that he was still around. The Starbucks was accidentally caught in a crossfire between Jiang and Xi, who understandably would have wished that Jiang had gone away forever and for real.

As professor Wang pointed out, unfortunately, Starbucks stood on the wrong side.

In the meanwhile, Xi Jinping praised Wal-Mart and Coca-Cola for their contributions to Chinese economy.

Seven Do Not Say

Colleges professors across China received directives that following seven phrases should not be mentioned in classroom. Notice that the wording 'mention', these phrases must be avoided altogether, not to say discussed.

  1. Universal values;
  2. Free press;
  3. Civil society;
  4. Civil rights;
  5. Past mistakes committed by the Party;
  6. Crony capitalism;
  7. Judicial independence;

The move is seen as an extension to the infamous 'Five Do Not Do' announced by former Speaker of the People's Congress Mr. Wu BangGuo two years earlier. In the annual session of the National People's Congress in 2011, Wu stated that China would not

  1. allow multiple parties competing for ruling;
  2. allow variation to party's voice;
  3. allow trias politica principle and congress with real power;
  4. explore federalism;
  5. privatize;

While the new core advocate for a 'Great Chinese Dream', Chill ran up spines for intellectuals in China.

Under Xi's leadership, China enters an era of Mao 2.0. In one hand, it places national interests above personal benefits; on the other hand, it excludes common people from entering the upper layer of the ruling class.

Recent Photo of Song Yaowu Surfaced

One red princeling Hu Shiying posted a photo of a private gathering of China's red princelings, in which a infamous red guard Song Yaowu appeared.

The party was hosted by Xi Jinping, then CCP Party Boss in Zhejiang Province. Others appeared in this photo includes Bo Xicheng (son of Bo Yibo and brother of Bo Xilai), Liu Yuan (son of Liu Shaoqi), Wang Qishan (son in law of Yao Yilin), Yang Li (daughter of Yang Shangkun), Chen Yuan (son of Chen Yun) among others. Song Yaowu is the women 4th from left in the front. Xi Jinping is 3rd from right in the second row.

Song, together with another Red Guard Deng Rong (daughter of Deng Xiaoping), killed their teacher Bian Zhongyun, the first teacher to be killed by students in the Great Cultural Revolution. The incident opened an era when red guards across the country were mobilized to take over schools by violence. Many more teachers would be tortured and killed in the next few years.

What Happened to Xi?

US delegation was notified around 11:00 pm Tuesday, that China's Vice President Xi Jinping would not be able to meet with visiting Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as previously scheduled on Wednesday. Xi's two other meetings with foreign visitors, including Singapore's Lee Hsien Loong, were also cancelled.

Xi is due to become the fourth 'core' of the CCP upon the opening of the now postponed 18th National Congress of CCP, following steps of Chairman Mao, Designer Deng, Explorer Jiang and current core Mr. Hu Jintao. With airtight media control, little more is known except words from the US delegation, 'scheduling change due to a back injury.'

There had been uneasy suggestions that Xi might be sacked, based on some unexpected move in Beijing:

  • 8/31/2012 Professor Deng of the Party School headed by Xi published a review of Hu's 10 years tenure as the core. The paper harshly criticized Hu's rule with a list of 'ten big blunders'.

  • 9/1/2012 Li Zhanshu replaced Ling Jihua as CCP Central Committee's chief of staff. Ling is believed to be Hu's henchman, while Li is believed to be close to Xi. It is reported that Hu's Plan B to promote another henchman (Hu Chunhua) to Ling's place also failed.

  • 9/1/2012 The National Congress keeps former Chongqing Party Chief Bo Xilai's membership after a validation process where four others were removed from the Congress. As a member of the Congress, Bo would not be subject to being arrested under Chinese law.

  • Unverifiable sources said Xi called two meetings with military brasses without notifying Hu while Hu was away visiting Hong Kong in July.

  • Back injury? Perhaps Xi was stabbed by a hit man of his political rival; or maybe nationally famed singer Peng Liyuan (Xi's current wife) had demanded too much on bed the night before.

Some read the sudden change of schedule as a gesture of protest on US's support to Japan's claim of Diaoyu Islands. Japanese government formally included the disputed islands into its Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ), overlapping with Taiwan's ADIZ.

Some agreed with the Diaoyu Islands theory, but pointed to an opposite direction. Xi avoided showing a stiff face to US as the next core as he would have to under the intensified situation over Diaoyu Islands dispute.

Is Xi's absence a drama, suspense, thriller, adventure, action, romance or a comedy? Regardless, without a free media, citizens have to speculate all possible scenarios with help of some wild imaginations.

The Leading Princelings

Vice President Xi Jinping is due to assume the supreme-leadership of China in one year. Many cited words such as confidence as their first impression, but it could be simply arrogance in disguise.

Other leading Princelings do not fare much better either.

Bo Xilai, the Governor of Chongqing Metropolitian, had been finding his way to the top by revitalizing the Great Cultural Revolution under his absolute reign of the Southeastern city. Thousands of people were persecuted and jailed without going through legal system, some executed despite national outcry. On February 6th, his henchman the police chief Mr. Wang Lijun walked in the US General Consulate in Chengdu seeking asylum protection from Bo himself. The move effectively marked the end of his political ambition.

General Liu Yuan, son of former President Liu Shaoqi who was persecuted to death in the Great Cultural Revolution, had an unusual hurdled path in his political ascending. It seemed the overwhelming national sympathy on his father's tragic political farewell was not enough to propel him at any level in the past 30 years. Liu had to be moved across the board each time to get a promotion. He had been the Governor of a Province, Commander of Paramilitary Troops, Party Boss of a university before being named a Lieutenant General in the Logistical Corp.

Liu made quite a few splashes in what used to be a quiet-on-the-surface pool of political affairs in Beijing one year before the once decade power transition. A deputy of his, Lieutenant General Gu Junsheng was removed from duty under fraud investigations, echoing his vows made last month to fight corruptions in the army. Liu also backed his advisers to make voice on state issues. For example, he ordered the Army to publish a book authored by his adviser Zhang Musheng.

As a matter of fact, both the outsider world, as well as people in China with opposing political views are having great expectations on the new leadership, partially because of the current core's seemingly weakness when facing interest groups.

Xi himself does not have a clean record:

  • Xi divorced his wife, then married a young pop star Ms. Peng Liyuan;
  • Xi was the Governor of Fujian Province when the 'largest smuggling scandal' broke out;
  • Xi was the Governor of Zhejiang when the corruption of Leqing County took place, which ultimately led to public execution of a Village Head Qian Yunhui;
  • Xi ordered to use a girl with better appearance to act in voice of another non-presentablegirl at the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympic;
  • Xi obtained a J.D. from Qinghua University without attending a single lecture in classroom nor writing a single line on paper;
  • Xi interfered to sentence business woman Wu Ying to death so that some local officials in Zhejiang could take her fortune.

After a long waiting, The Princelings are ready to set off conquering the world, but are you ready for the manner it would be executed?

Qian Yunhui Case in Appeal Court

Qin Yunhui murder case is under examination at an appeal court.

Calling a Stag a Horse

The history has the strong this way: a powerful minister of Qing Dynasty (221-207 B.C.) Zhao Gao was planning a coup, so he wanted to tell how many ministers in the court would stand with him. Zhao had an idea. He presented a stag to the child emperor, 'Your Majesty! See the beautiful horse I brought you!' Still a child, the emperor was amused, 'but it's a stag', replied in joy. And the child emperor asked his ministers standing in the court, 'can't you all see?'

Most ministers kept silence. Some stated it must be a horse to please the powerful minister Zhao Gao. A few rebutted in distaste, and they were soon thrown into jail by Minister Zhao Gao.

Reading the history book, people can't help wondering, why it had to be carried out in this spectacular way?

People had been playing these seemingly meaningless mental game for thousands of years. In book 1984, Big Brother could not be satisfied until people sincerely agreed with 'guilt' placed on them. Big Brother is as obsessed on playing with people's mind as, who else, communists.

Qian Yunhui, a village head who stood up for his villagers, was executed by local government in Zhejiang Province to deter the villagers from asking for their fair share of their land taken away by the government when Dr. Xi Jinping was the Governor of Zhejiang. The execution was carried out in bright day light on a busy road, with local people walking around and residential buildings lined up on both sides. When it became a national and international media event, the CCP decided the original plot was not good for publicity. At that point, the government at all levels were mobilized for one task, 'Calling a Stag a Horse'. They did it, but they wanted everyone in the world to do it too, a mission impossible with today's connected world thanks to cell phone videos and micro-blogs. But boy they just don't quit.

After everything failed, after all government witness was proved lying and after all evidence presented by the government fabricated, the government 'found' new evidence, from villagers.

The official Xinhua News Agency reported, one villager who kept a 'spy watch' wore by Qian at the time of incident turned it to the authority 'voluntarily'. [Reality check: the villager, a close friend of Qian, was jailed all the time after the incident, and the watch was hidden at his home. Therefore, there is no way he can turn in the watch 'voluntarily'.] This is not an ordinary watch, but one with a video camera and a microphone, and is capable of recording 3 hours of video footage once triggered by a button, just like James Bond used in the movie. By the way, it's pretty cheap at below $20, and had been widely available everywhere in China. Many Chinese keep one, just in case, as admitted by writer and car racer Han Han. So watch out when you are sitting close to a Chinese. Anyway, for obvious reason, Qian activated the recording before the accident (why? My toddler would ask, and it's a good question as you don't do that all the time), and the watch recorded the whole incident in its entirely, and more. If you have been following the case, you would recall that the particular government surveillance video camera overseeing the crime scene was conveniently malfunctioned a few hours before the incident, and mysteriously recovered minutes after the incident took place. After the incident became a media frenzy, the government had plowed the village of a thousand resident to search and confiscated cameras and cell phones alike. Now, a month later, with the new critical evidence, and while all other methods had failed, the government had a new idea. Instead of destroying all physical recording, why not,..' Yes, you got it.

Twenty days later after the government obtained the watch, the official Xinhua News Agency published a 'unedited full-length' video recording of the magic watch, from the moment Qian walking on the road by himself, to the moment he was struck by a truck 'accidentally'. You can see the owner of the watch walking, the scene of the street, the truck coming, and the 'accident'. The Xinhua News Agency claimed it was clearly a traffic tragedy, see!

Within a day, bloggers were able to decipher the video and found bugs every where. It's not just 'edited', but rather 'assembled'. And it's not done by James Cameron of Hollywood, but Sandy Tartar of Bollywood. Many blogs explained in details how bad a job the government and Xinhua News Agency had done. here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here.

As it is approaching the lunar calendar of the traditional Chinese New Year, consider sending a post card to the old father of late Qian Yunhui, who was brutally executed by the police one month ago in Yueqing, Zhejiang Province. Qian was the elected head of village Zhaiqiao. Because Qian led protest against taking villagers land without proper compensation, the local government chopped his head off with a heavy duty engineering truck at the entrance of the village in bright daylight, with villagers and travelers on the watch. Four police beat Qian, then hold his head down on the path a slow rolling wheel of the truck. When the accident caught national media attention, the government insisted it was an accident.

Qian's old father told reporters, at the moment Qian took the job six years ago, he knew Qian would be killed.

Road Accident: Premeditated Murder or Public Execution?

With a new video, the dusts have settled down and what left for debate is: whether the 'traffic accident', as described by the police, is a premeditated murder as suspected by the victim's fellow villagers, or a public execution as demonstrated by the evidence?

Mr. Qian Yunhui is the head of a small village of 2,500 people in Yueqing, Zhejiang Province. About 20 acres land of the village was taken to build a power plant. Villagers learned that the land compensation grant was intercepted by local government. Qian vowed to get villager's money back by legal process and petitions to higher government. In the past 6 years, Qing was thrown to jail three times, and served a two years sentence for speaking for his villagers.

Tuesday morning, Qian received a call from the deputy mayor of town government, and left home in a hurry. Moments later, he was found dead under the wheel of an engineering truck. The official edition of the story is: Qian crossed the highway without watching carefully. The truck driver saw him too late, and compounded by the weather condition, failed to stop the truck.

A role in the CIS said, every body has a story to tell. Qian's body laid in an odd posture. The only wound on Qian was his neck, which was severed with the detached head still looks as if connected to the torso by the wheel. His body looks like knee-ed down to insert the head beneath the wheel.

According to witnesses, there were more than 10 security guards on the scene when 'the accident' happened. Four uniformed men inserted Qian under the waiting truck. The deputy mayor observed the process from a white government sedan. The uniformed men and the sedan left the scene shortly after. Within minutes, hundreds of riot police descended to the scene and started beating all witnesses.

The incident got media attention because Qian posted a detailed description of the dispute between the villagers and local government on Tianya, the most popular Internet site, six months ago. The post attracted little attention until some made the connection between the post and Qian's death. Despite mounting suspicious evidence and questioning from the media and Netizens, the Yueqing (county-level) government insisted the finding of 'traffic accident', and the higher up Wenzhou government confirmed the conclusion.

While the incident continued fomenting online, police detained all witnesses and had them retracted their testimonies. Police also confiscated any video recording equipment held by villagers. All villagers found at home were 'invited' to the police station for collaboration in the investigation. They would not be sent back home until signing a statement acknowledging the government's official story. The old generation vowed to resist, while most younger generations fled to friends and relatives.

A high qualify cell phone video was uploaded to the Internet on Thursday. Although the original clip was promptly removed, numerous copies survived on foreign video hosting sites such as youtube and videobeam. The video was taken only minutes after the accidents happened, before the arrival of riot police force. The video clearly showed the truck was in an unreasonable location relative to the road: off-road on the left side. It also showed the land beneath the truck was dry while it was raining. There was no 20 feet braking line as the police claimed, but a 5 feet print of path with clear tire patterns. It proved the truck was waiting at the scene to strike Qian. Also, the photo produced by the police in the government news press was proved to be faked because the official photo showed braking lines and scratches on the front bumper. None was present in the video.

As of the time of writing, police detained Qian's brother, sister in law, son, daughter in law, as well as all witnesses who had talked to media.

The new video did not contain the moment of the incident. However, it proved police faked evidence to make up the official story, and it is compatible to description portraited by witnesses.

The scene is covered by a surveillance video camera. The latest examination of that particular camera was only two days ago when it showed working normally. The government initially claimed the video camera was nonfunctional at the time, then claimed the camera was not capable of recording. A telecommunication engineer, also a Netizen, revealed that model of video system by default stream all video to a centralized file server to be stored for later discovery. Furthermore, the police presented a footage of the scene recorded from that camera about 2 hours after the accident took place in the news press. Also, according to the government's edition, the truck was on route from an adjacent village to a working site. Netizens challenged the government to release footage from the traffic cameras, altogether 24 in the described path, to show the truck had been moving instead of waiting at the scene in the 30 minutes prior to the accident. The government refused the request, citing security reasons.

It is perceived the police and the government was not interested in seriously covering up the incident. Instead, the regime is setting up an example for anyone dare to challenge the communists authority.

Xi Jinping, the next 'core' to succeed Hu Jintao in 2012, was the governor of Zhejiang Province. It is suspected that Xi had a role in the accident.

President China's Fake Diploma

The 'Emperor Employee', or 'No. 1 Career Executive' of China, Mr. Tang Jun (actually, Mr. Tang is an American citizen) was revealed to having made up his education experience. Mr. Tang had claimed he held doctoral degrees from University of Nagoya and CalTech. Both turned out to be false. Mr. Tang produced a diploma from Pacific Western University issues in 1995. Not only the 'University' had been a known diploma mill that to be disbanded by both California and Hawaii where they operated, but also the issuing date was in a gap (1994 to 1996) when they were not allowed to renew their business license. Mr. Tang is the only employee among entrepreneurs in the Top 500 most wealthy people in China, with an annual benefit of $1B RMB ($150 Million) at his current job. Mr. Tang held the CEO of Microsoft China before he left Microsoft in 2001.

Anyway, that was yesterday's news, and the ripple effects of the it are causing collateral damages to an unprepared group of elite executives of Chinese companies and made them busy fixing their online resume. According to a Wikipedia run by Baidu, more than 100 people changed their who is who VIP entries to remove references to the university.

Communism officials, too, are caught in surprise. Vice President of China, the next 'core' of CCP and President of China to succeed Mr. Hu Jintao, is also a fake diploma buyer, only from a Chinese university, the Qinghua University.

Operating a rather successful residential college aside, Qinghua University is the largest diploma mill in China, specialized in customizing advanced degrees from communist Party members and wealthy businessmen alike. For example, Mr. Xi Jinping, received a J.D. from Qinghua University. His dissertation is entitled 'Rural Marketing Is the Right Way for China's Economy'. The paper in its full length is available for download from Qinghua University's website.

A disgusting Picture

What a disgusting pose!

The next core thinks he is the Mao Zedong alive. Dream on. By the way, in Chinese tradition, it is extremely unwise to behave presumptuously before one assumes the highest leadership.

The Order Came from the Highest Level

Chen told the Beijing Music Radio that the order to switch girls were from the highest level, a communism politburo member, 3 days before the opening night, after the last formal rehearsal. Comparing this with news report at the time, the 'politburo member' is Mr. Xi Jinping. Son of Mr. Xi Zhongxun, an senior communism official. Mr. Xi Jinping has been set to replace Mr. Hu Jintao to be the next 'core' of the CCP leadership.

It'll be interesting to see on which scale this unnecessarily stupid act may cost Xi's potential to be the next 'core' of China.
