Returnee Leaped to Death

Thirty-nine year old Chemistry professor Dr. Cao Tingbing plunged out of a man's room on 9th floor of the Research Complex on March 16, 2012. Cao was the Chairperson of the Chemistry Department at the People's University (Renmin University) in Beijing. Born in 1973, Cao spent three years at Harvard as a postdoc researcher before returned to China in 2005.

Cao of Guangshan, Henan Province, graduated from Beijing Institute of Technology in 1996, then from Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology in 1999 with a Master's Degree. Cao then received a Doctor's Degree from Beijing University in 2002.

Cao left a death note. It is said the main contributor of his death was work pressure and relationship with colleagues in the Chemistry Department at the People's University. Cao is survived by a little kid, and a jobless wife.

Dr. Tu Xubin, a lecture of Zhejiang University, also a returnee with a PhD from Northwestern University in Chicago, jumped to his death in 2009.

update: July 28, 2012

Professor Li Jianxin of Beijing University revealed that Dr. Cao committed suicide after seven of his colleagues in People's University turned him in to the Family Planning authority on his second child.

    What's interesting from the numbers:
  • The top 2 universities swiped all high score students with no exception. In other words, the best student getting in any other school is not as good as the worst student who gets in either Beijing University or Qinghua University;
  • The Fudan University, Shanghai University of Communications, Zhejing University, USTC, People's University and Nanjing University together formed the second tier group.
  • There is little difference among tier three schools going forward;
The above observations echoed the choice made by students in entire mainland China, compiled from another study:
Qinghua University (1.25), Beijing University (1.61), Fudan University (3.36), Shanghai University of Communications (3.60), Zhejing University (5.40), People's University (6.24), USTC (6.28), Nanjing University (7.76)
Number represented ranking of lowest admission score by province.

Twenty years ago, 2nd tier universities and some 3rd tier universities could share a scoop of high score students with 1st tier universities. At the time, there was no clear divide between say, Beijing University and Nankai University. Today, privileged employers should look no further than the top 2 schools. With exclusive access to talents and exclusive resource backed by the national government, Beijing University and Qinghua University leave no air for any other school to breathe.

2011: Happiness and Dignity

Happiness and Dignity is a song by Shao Yibei. Shao dedicated the song to the annual Congressional Session. Shao described ordinary people's feeling and envision of a better society with fairness and justice.
The lyric says:

When the Earth Reboot after a system update,
overnight the year of 2011 becomes the new Genesis.
While innocent people still searching for happiness,
the world has become a better place.

Lost soles farewelled, love ones rested,
in places Yushu and Zhouqu;
Underneath the surface,
miners and operators are studying meanings of life.
Kids of rich and poor are facing same fate and opportunities.
Every Chinese could smile and say,
we have medical insurance.

Shall we hope,
there should be the tune of happiness after all the suffering and struggling;
Shall we hope,
living in dignity no longer a miracle;
Let's hug together,
the world should not refuse reaching out arms.
Don't laugh at my hope for a chance to make wishes.

Children will not be abducted by human trafficker;
Farmers will not be thrown in jail on fictional law;
Officials and their families will not toy around laws and lives;
Dear leaders will stop wasting time on sexual explorations;
The resisting villager's watch will no longer be the only key evident;
College graduates will find jobs;
The railways of Spring should shorten the distance between home and us;
The skyrocketing gas price will no longer render motorists wordless.

Trust, the meaning will be conveyed for born on this land;
Love, and bless me with courage to feel;
Hug, indifferences should not intercept the arms reaching out;
Assure me, we are entitled to hope

Burning oneself will not be the only way to stop unlawful brutal eviction;
We are no longer lost in excessive taxes and fees;
Growth of salary should exceed growth of price;
Morality is out there along money and others;

The China Impression advertisement displayed at the Times Square should reflect fairness and justice
Numeral GDP should no longer be used only to cover the gap between wealth and poverty
Skyscrapers should give us more than a sigh
The residency system should no longer took away our freedom to breathe

Let's hope smiling on people's face are no longer just a mask;
Let's jump and breathe air of dignity;
Let's hug, the world should not refuse reaching out arms;
Believe me, I have right to make a wish.

Shao Yibei, a.k.a. Shao Xiaomao, was born in 1983. Entered Beijing University as the top student from Qinghai Province of year 2002, She majored Mass in Communication.

Insider Faulted Hospital on Thallium Death

A person with information posted online details of Wang Xiaoye's death. The Princeton Medical Hospital failed to take the patient's allegation that he had been poisoned seriously. Subsequent delay in making diagnosis and obtaining treatment caused the patient's life.

  • Wang informed the Hospital on possible poisoning by his chemist wife in the middle of a bitter divorce process when he checked himself in on Jan 14;
  • The Hospital thought Wang must be insane (to claim having been poisoned by his wife), and assigned a psychiatrist to evaluate his mental status;
  • On or about Jan 17, it happened that a Chinese nurse was assigned to Wang's bed on a 12 hours shift. This magic nurse recorded Wang's symptoms, then Googled online after going home. All traces point to one possibility, thallium poisoning. The Hospital was notified immediately;
  • The Hospital performed a test for thallium, which needed an out-of-State agency to interpret the result. The positive result took one week to come back on January 25. It was too late. Whiling awaiting for the official testing result, even though all findings point to thallium, the Hospital did not attempt to treat Wang for the entire 7 days. The Hospital saw the patient living a terrible death to his last breath.
The same poster windly2011 wrote about the case on Feb 2, 2011, before it was reported by the media; therefore, it looks like a credible source.

BJU Graduate Accused of Poisoning Husband with Thallium

A Beijing University graduate was charged with murdering her husband, a Qinghua alum. The couple were residents of Monroe Township of Middelsex County, NJ.

Wang Xiaoye (blue shirt in the middle), the victim earned a BS from Nanjing University and a Master degree from Qinghua University before caming to the States for PhD study at UPenn (PhD. MEAM '02). Wang worked as a computer engineer of PolyPaths, a financial company in NYC.

Li Tianhe, the wife, graduated from Beijing University with a BS. in Chemistry in 1995 after 6 years of study, followed by a Master degree in 1998. Friends said Li obtained another Master degree from U Penn before launched a job at Bristol-myers Squibb Company, a biopharmaceutical company in NJ. Li, a Chemist, has direct access to heavy metal material Thallium at work.

Their two years old son is under foster care. It is not sure at which point the 10 years marriage turned sore, but neighbors near their Monroe house all said they observed intensified domestic dispute since they moved in 2 years ago. Police car was constantly summoned to the otherwise quiet upscale community, multiple times in a bad week. One neighbor commented to a TV reporter "the woman's voice was higher than the man's voice". Given the cop culture in the US, one can only speculate that in every case when the police found the woman abusing the man each time they went in. Otherwise, the man would have been taken into custody at the scene. Police field guideline requires the officer to arrest the male partner if they observes a mark or have reason to believe an abuse by the male, even if the woman does not want to press charge.

Both Beijing University and Qinghua University had seen excessive share of Thallium poisoning cases. The a 'first Thallium poisoning case of China', a sophomore student Zhu Ling of Qinghua paralyzed and excessive amount of Thallium was found in her body. The suspect was one dorm roommate (8 students shared the room), but no one has been formally charged till this day. Zhu Ling's sister, a Beijing University student, died in a mysteriously way when hiking in a park with a group of Beijing University students. A few years later, one male student in Beijing University poisoned his classmate with Thallium, but confessed to the police just in time to save the poor boy's life.

Wang checked in a Princeton hospital for flu like symptom. When doctors were confused on his condition kept worsening under intensive medical care of two weeks, a nurse, "who remembering a case of Thallium poisoning in the 1990s in China", suggested to include a test for Thallium. Wang was diagnosed on 1/25/2011, but it was too late to save his life. Wang passed away the next day.

Education Blunders vs Education Blunders

Many envision the highlight of the next century as the competition between China and the USA. The core of the competition, all agreed, are human talents. In this regard, both are committing fatal blunders in education.

On the US side, the no-child-left-behind sounds nice in an ideal situation, but is the worst possible strategy in practice. Education funds are being wasted on a group of population who do not learn now and who will not work in the future.

On the China side, an academic Olympic mentality prevails when most money are spent on two universities, expecting them to rank with Harvard and Yale. First of all, you can't buy Nobel with money, and greediness always win over hard work. The two schools are entangling themselves with money making. Evidently, Beijing University was revealed to have made itself a regional front office of well know diploma mill Pacific Western University of Hawaii, one disbanded by the State of Hawaii many years ago. The other one, Qinghua University sell diploma to whoever pay the price, such as businessman Wu Zheng, and passing out diploma to those in power, such as Vice President of China, Xi Jinping. Secondly, for those graduated from the residential part of the two universities, many went abroad and never return. A survey of the class 2001 of Beijing University revealed that 21% of the graduates went abroad. The ratio is even higher on the science and engineering side, as high as 87% of certain disciplines. In the end, the mega-investment became scholar to reward Chinese students to go to the US.

US made the mistake for not raising up their own elite students, Fortunately, Chinese students filled the blank.

Phony Diploma Discussions Censored

The CCP's propaganda arm has banned news media to cover the fomenting gossip on Mr. Tang Jun's fake diploma, PhD in E.E. from Pacific Western University a recognized diploma mill.

Tang, former General Manager of Microsoft China, and the 'emperor employee' of China with $150 million annual salary, was revealed to have his degree received from the diploma mill. The incident triggered a discussion on the relationship between financially success and personal dignity. However, Chinese Netizens soon realized Tang's incident was not an isolated case. The Vice President of China, Xi Jinping, was also found to claim a J.D. from a diploma mill in China, the Qinghua University. Xi's dissertation, which was published as a mandate requirement for degree recipients in China, was found to be a lousy essay in rural marketing economy and bearing no apparent connection to the degree granted.

Because Qinghua University is specialized in customizing advanced degrees for CCP's leaders, the gossip is immediately labelled as 'unhealthy' and 'inharmonious'. News agents were ordered to stay away, and online forums were ordered to delete all traces of the discussion.

Interestingly enough, the other well known diploma mill in China, Beijing University, is also found involved in Tang's case. The Pacific Western University, which does not have a campus, or even an office in the US, has a huge representation in Beijing, China. The PWU maintained a satellite campus on main campus of the Beijing University.

Chinese officials should, actually, relax and follow their US counterparts's suit. Although using phony diploma is a crime in some states (for example, The Texas Penal Code, Section 32.52), it is considered acceptable by Federal government. When approached by CBS News regarding senior officials, including Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense, who held degrees purchased from diploma mills, Pentagon spokesman replied, 'Get Lost'.

Legality Issue in Deng Yujiao's Case

Twenty one years old Deng Yujiao is a staff in a small town resort in remote eastern Sichuan, until the evening of May 10, 2009. Three local officials, after dined with a local business (treated by the business because they helped to suppress a labor uprising), arrived the place and found Deng washing her clothing in the laundry room. The officials asked Deng to perform 'Special' service (sex). Deng refused. Then Deng ran to employee lounge to hide. The officials followed Deng to the lounge. One of the officials used a big stack of money bill to slap Deng Yujiao's face, and firmly demanded special service as a self-claimed 'wealthy customer'. Deng tried to run away, but was blocked by the other two officials. The first official lost his patience, and pressed Deng Yujiao to the bed. Deng managed to get away. The first official again pressed Deng Yujiao to the bed. While the second and the third officials pressing Deng Yujiao to the bed, the first official raped Deng. After the first official got off from Deng, Deng managed to grab a pedicure knife she used at work and struck the first official four times. Deng Yujiao called police while fencing the officials with her pedicure knife. After police arrived, the first official fell, and died later.

Shen Zhen Red Song Club, a left-wing Maoist group will dedicate its weekly gathering on May 24 to 'Heroine Deng Yujiao'. This is one of few moment when left and right in China's political composition agrees and recognizes a common ground. Outside the political turmoil, people are outraged. The entire online presence of Chinese language are covered with petition to honor Deng Yujiao as a hero.

Yet the police, under guidance of a special task force of the central government, charged Deng Yujiao with the most serious and absurd crime, premeditated First Degree Murder. The central government is sending an unambiguous signal to its base, the 7 million strong government officials, that the Party will take care of them, if they take care of the Party.

After Deng called the police to report the (rape) crime, Deng was placed under police control in a mental facility. Nobody, including her mother and lawyers, could visit her even after repeated petitions. Yet, police arranged various party to 'examine' and evaluate Deng Yujiao, and have TV station to air some of the footage they took showing Deng being bond to the bed. The Chinese police not only feels comfortable using mental facility, but is also proud to show off it's power to everyone who might challenge the system. The message is clear: the smallest offense to the lowest officials must be punished to the extreme.

It is particular shameful, and sad, to see Beijing University Director Sun Dongdong advocating the mandatory power of police by claiming ninety-nine percent (99%) of persons who disagree with the government are suffering from mental problem, and that the most humane thing to do is to lock them up. After dozens years of evolution under the Communism ruling, The Beijing University has matured into an active and proud in house slave of the communist regime.

Beijing University Police Beat Up Protesters

Protesters were beaten up by campus security force. Professor Sun Dongdong of Beijing University told the media that 99% of people who did not agree with government were suffering from mental disorder. Mental disorder had been used by Communism government to lock up political dissidents. However since last year, it has become a commonly cited reasoning to lock up anyone who fail to behave 'harmonically'.

In the communism hierarchy, Beijing University is a deputy ministry level government agency. Professor Sun Dongdong is the top forensic expert of the Ministry of Public Security.

Poor Chinese, Wealthy Chinese

Examining social phenomena with quantitative methods starts in the west, and most of the commonly used models are based on culture and study in the west. It should be noted that the cultural differences must be taken into account when applying popular models on China studies.

Sixty percent of wealth in the United States are owned by top 5% people. The corresponding figures in China, however, are 70% and 0.4%. When the world is tapping into the 'high personal saving ratio' of Chinese to drive it out of the economic downturn, what people may not have realized is that 80% of the deposits in China are made by 20% of its people. These 80% is unlikely to be spent on normal commodities, and family appliances is not likely to make a dent on it either. The rest 20% is shared by 80% of Chinese people, which equivalents to 3,385 Yuan RMB or $500 per capita. So a bunch Chinese with $500 saving in the bank are going to save the world? Not to say that these group of people will not be making extra spending to jeopardize their very survival.

Traditional values and family architecture have helped maintaining stability despite the huge gap between rich and poor, though. In 2007, professor Li Yining of Beijing University announced a new method to calculate the Gini Coefficient. Because the huge income gap between residents live in city and rural areas (72:1), two separate number will be calculated, one represents the Gini Coefficient among city dwellers, while the other represents that of farmers. Finally, a third number is calculated as the mean of the two numbers, and to be used as the official Gini Coefficient of China.

Wife of PKU Party Boss Accused of Stealing

Ms. Yang Rui, wife of a deputy Party Boss of Beijing University, was accused by friends of relatives of stealing from Dr. Ji Xianlin, a Beijing University professor, and attempted murdering the old professor to cover up. Mr. Xu Hongzhi, the president of Beijing University was accused of detaining Dr. Ji to cover the scandal.

99 years old scholar Ji Xinlin is a respectable living 'national treasure', and the only one of such. Because of his health condition, he lives in a top security military hospital (PLA 301 Hospital). Any visiting must be granted directly by the president of the Beijing University, a minister level communism party leader. Dr. Ji is a most reputable figure in China, and enjoys great respect from the ruling party, peer scholars, students and the public. Prime minister Wen Jiabao visited Dr. Ji three times in the hospital.

Recent Internet posts alleged Ms. Yang Rui was named to be Mr. Ji's secretary. While Dr. Ji being away from home in the 301 hospital, Ms. Yang Rui stole vast amount of personal collections from Mr. Ji's residence. Some of these stolen items surfaced in collectible auctions, which led to the revealing of this scandal. A buyer familiar with Dr. Ji bought the items, and notified the Beijing University. Then, it was alleged that Ms. Yang tried to kill Mr. Jin to cover this up. Because Ms. Yang Rui is wife of the deputy communism party boss of Beijing University Mr. Wu Zhipan, both the president of Beijing University and the party boss of Beijing University ordered a broad scale cover up op. Dr. Ji was put under house arrest in the 301 hospital. Dr. Ji's friends and family members were prohibited from visiting.

This is very strange, very weird, very unreal, because of Dr. Ji's 'national treasure' social status, and because of his personal connections to the top level party officials, including the current prime minister Mr. Wen Jiabao. However, a prominent and influential public figure, Mr. Tang Shizen, a former People's Daily reporter, endorsed the allegation on his Blog. Tang, a Beijing University graduate and Ji's student, detailed how he rushed to save Dr. Ji's life after having been tipped of the situation. Then Mr. Ji's granddaughter Ji Qing published an open letter to the president and party boss of Beijing University about the incident. Ji Qing accused of them lying to Mr. Wen Jiabao about Dr. Ji's situation. Finally, Dr. Ji said himself, that he did not want to stay in the 301 hospital, and that he had to pay for the hospitalization. It is reported that Mr. Xu Hongzhi visited Dr. Ji when the scandal broke, but Dr. Ji refused to have dinner with him.

It is an unusual detail that Dr. Ji mentioned about payment. Public figures like Mr. Ji would even have a choice to pay out of pocket on medical treatment. It sounds as bazaar as hearing Mr. Hu Jintao complained on his apartment rent or monthly utility bill.

People never understand how greedy some party leaders or wife of party leaders can be, nor could people understand how far other party leaders are willing to go to cover their commarades asses. All we can say is that: this is a magic land, where unthinkable are be made true under the party's leadership. However, it is still sad to see a once elite university fell in the hands of a few clowns. It will also be interesting to see whether Mr. Wen Jiabao will turn a deaf ear to these serious boiling 'allegations'.

A Matter of Degrees

Qinghua University and Beijing University top the rank of colleges graduates who contributed most US doctoral recipients. U C Berkeley dropped to No. 3 on the list and Seoul National University of Korea follows at No. 4. University of Michigan is at a distant No. 5. The rank was based on Cpst Analysis of SED, 2006.

PKU Welcomes Incoming Student Party Members

The banner reads 'Beijing University Welcomes Incoming Student Communism Party Members'. The banner is hanged atop the south gate of Beijing University. What a shame for the most prestigious university in China to bow and lick a political party's ass in public. Perhaps for PKU faculty and staff, there's no better way to swear loyalty to the Party than humiliating oneselvs.

HOPE Project Funds and Beijing University

September 29th, 2006 Beijing University awarded a May 4th medal to the widow of Li Zhiqiang, a gangster who was accidentally killed by a peddler. Li was hired by the local government to maintain the order of the street. On August 11, 2006, Li led a groups of mobs assaulted peddler Sun Yingjie, who failed to render a protection fee in time. Li was accidentally killed on the scene.

Beijing University made a mistake to award the 'May 4th' Medal, because 'May 4th' represents an 100 years tradition of young Chinese intellectuals in standing up against mafia ruling. In this case, Li was a contracted gang member, presenting a mafia government.

It was also reported that the metropolitan associate director of the HOPE Project Foundation, Mr. Xuan Deng presented 30,000 RMB to the deceased gangster's family. Regardless the nature of the death of the gangster, it is wrong to misuse donated education funds.

According to its project, HOPE Project Foundation is a registered charity to improve education for kids in poverty. When you make donations to the HOPE project next time, think about where is the money going.

Cat Killer Update 2, Tintin's Picture

More pictures of the slain kitty surfaced on the Internet. We also learned her name, Tintin. Tintin was a three months old white kitty living by the Beijing University Library. When she went into the library, she was killed by an angry medical student of Beijing University Song Hanming. Song first stretched Tintin with one hand holding Tintin's tail and the other hand holding Tintin's head. Then Song smashed Tintin to the wall in front of a crowd of hundreds faculty and students. Tintin's blood and brain tissue was all over the giant reading room.

The cat killer Song Hanming is a student leader of Beijing University. He is in his 5th of medical program, and currently serves as a resident doctor in the University hospital. The University responded to a press frenzy that Mr. Song was an exemplary student with excellent grades. Song's mentor at Beijing University, Professor Li said Song was a model student, and that this was only an effective technique to release pressure often used by medical students at Beijing University. Beijing University asked the press to leave the student alone to his study.

The pictures were taken days before Tintin's death.

Cat Killer Update, PKU fought back

The PKU library and the door of the room where the kitty was abused and killed when its head was smashed to the wall and left blood and brain tissues all over the place. PKU stated that Song was an exemplary student leader, a pride of PKU.

PKU alumni and alumnae around the world fight back the accusation that one of its medical student was heartless when he abused and killed a kitty in the school library in front of hundreds students and faculty.

Many reasoning have been suggested in the debate, including:
1) The initial handling of the kitty by the student Song Hanming, stretch the kitty with head in one hand and the tail in another hand was the typical training a medical student at PKU received in their first semester at school to kill, though it was regrettable that the student was not skillful enough to kill the kitty with one stretch;
2) A difference must be drawn between the behavior of a medical student and that of normal people, because a medical student would have to face death of animal and patients alike on a daily basis. Regardless the way Song abused and killed the kitty, it was only a reflection of Song's dedication to his career as a doctor, which requires no emotion in such circumstances;

A Beijing University student killed a 3 month old kitty in front of his stunned classmates and professors in the school library by throwing the head of the cat to the wall after abusing it repeatedly in he library.

Like the Fudan Scissorhands Zhang Liangliang(a Fudan University student who gauged dozens of cat's eyes out with a pair of scissors, and tauted himself as Fudan Scissorhands), this Beijing University student Song Hanming is a student government official and 'excellent' student according to spokesperson of the Beijing University. Song's mentor Professor Li of Beijing University told reporters of Shanghai based Xinmin News that the student was loved by his peers in Beijing University.

Song Hanming 宋韩明 enrolled in the medical school of the Beijing University in 2002. He is a resident doctor at the Beijing University Hospital when he abused and killed the kitty in the school library in front of the crowd. According to Professor Li, medical students at Beijing University are under heavy academic pressure, and it was perfectly understandable to kill some animals, such as a couple of cats to release the pressure. Professor Li further pointed out that this had been proven as an effective measure in reducing cased of patients abuse committed by medical doctors produced by Beijing University.
