Fudan University Poisoning Case Suspect Unmasked

This is said to be the weibo of the single suspect Mr. Lin. Lin's last weibo was posted on April 7. He lamented on the limit of reach of medical assistance, and wish he could help patients beyond his specialities.

Lin tipped the cause, Alloxan, of his roommate Mr. Huang's illness via an anonymous message, which helped doctors to make a positive diagnose, but too late to save Huang life. The message also helped police to trace back to Lin. Huang passed away on April 16 after fell into liver exhaustion shortly after April 1st.

Lin was taken away from his dorm room by police in the night on April 13, but it is still not clear as to a cause or motivation.

Rumor has it that Lin's target was a third student sharing the dorm room. Huang wasn't staying at the time, but came back unexpectedly. Huang felt sick after drank from the water dispenser installed in the room. Huang suspected the water was contaminated (from manufacture, transportation, etc.) so he washed the water bottle afterwards.

Lin was originally from Guangdong Province, and attended the Sun Yet-sen University.

The victim's last weibo was on March 13: Dark Knight: No one can eascape moral judgement.

IKEA's Crisis

For some Ikea is the symbol for pragmatic and effective design; for some it's the alias of modern cost control. But, we are not talking Swedish furniture.

Not long after Ikea was forced to pull its iconic meat balls from menu because of horse meat scandal, it was discovered to serve chocolate cakes which contains, take a big pause, fecal matter. The chocolate cakes in question was provided by a domestic supplier in its homeland Sweden.

While anyone who produce someone will run into a quality issue sometime, Ikea's cake problem is beyond apprehension.

China's Shanghai Custom discovered the fecal cakes last November, and destroyed them. The same Custom discovered more in December with exact same issue, and destroyed them. All together, two tons of chocolate cakes imported from Sweden were destroyed last year.

Ikea 'learned of' the incident in March. It was so bad, that they pulled the chocolate cakes from 23 countries.

On the surface, it seems that 1) although food quality in China is bad, that in Sweden is worse; 2) the perception of food problems in China is in part because they actually keep an eye on it.

Ikea should reflect on the reason why it looks like bad food product in the whole wild world are stalking them step by step.

China, Call An Ambulance

What an English speaking foreigner in Shanghai actually said around 10:30 in the morning of August 10, 2012 was, 'fuck you Chinese, call an ambulance.'

It was at a busiest corner, intersection of W Huaihai Rd and Xinhua Rd, in downtown Shanghai. An old man was lying on the sidewalk unconsciously. By-standers passing by, some stayed away out of a perimeter of at least 10 yards. It looked weird and creepy.

Before jumping on your moral judgement of what's in the mind of hundreds people who passed by that morning, it helps to travel back to a case dabbed Calabash Monk Case of Nanjing, where a Judge Wang Hao famously asked a young man who tried to help an old woman, 'had you not caused her problem, why did you attend a stranger on the street?' The young man was ordered to pay the old woman's medical expenses, only because he was stopped to help.

China is always proud of its long history of culture and social orders, a comfort zone Chinese can always refer to when frustrated by aggressive cultural invasions from the western world. Although often humbled by the whites, Chinese never let go a chance to discriminate on blacks. But one black student from Central Africa put many Chinese in shame, by being the only one who dare speak honestly.

August 29, 2012 at Luogang Airport in Hefei, Anhui, a traveler and his wife, drunk, and having made the entire flight waited, got on the airplane with tons of bags and suitcases. The couple beat up a flight attendant and threw suitcases at her. The flight attendant did nothing but fled to the end of the plane and cry. The attendant later described the incident on Weibo, which generated a public outcry. When the flight touched down in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, it turned out the traveler was an army officer Col. Fang Daguo. Col. Fang summoned a truck load of soldiers to the police station at the airport as back up. When the air at the police station heated up, the Weibo post went viral across China, calling for official investigation.

The official investigation vindicated Col. Fang. The police announcement stated there was an altercation between the flight attendance and Col. Fang's wife. It also denied the rumor of truck load soldiers summoned by Col. Fang, disregard pictures of the vehicle with license number posted by concerned citizens online.

There are over 100 passengers, in additional to the flight crew on board, but news media can't find any Chinese witness. Days later, reporters exhausted the list, and went down to the bottom, a black international student named Princelione Doubane. Doubane is the only passenger who is willing to testify. Doubane told reporters he saw the entire incident. He saw Col Fang grabbed the flight attendant, and he saw the marks on the girls body. He also testified the flight attendant did not try to fight back or defense herself.

When Doubane's testimony was published, the government agreed to suspend Col. Fang for further investigation.

Before jumping on your moral judgement of what's in the mind of a hundred passengers on Flight CZ 3874, it helps to read on some notes posted by the reporter on this case. Several passengers were willing to give their account, but dare not reveal their names, thus their words can't be used in the newspaper. One brave sole who did not reside in Guangzhou decided to come forward anyway, but then was threatened by the government and went hiding.

Der Fatherland has been paralyzed by a deadly virus called communist regime. China, Call an Ambulance!

Simply Incomprehensible

The absurdity of the CCP's ruling can only be surpassed by itself.

A Chinese fighter-bomber JH-7 'Flying Leopard' crashed when performing in the 2011 China Xi'an International Air & Space Exhibition. One pilot was believed dead, another one was seriously injured. The PLAAF issued a statement that no military airplane took part in the performance. It would be a surprised, since not every one is allowed to own/operate an actively advanced fighter in today's China. However, the real shocking news came 24 hours after the accident, and 12 hours after one of the key mothpieces of the Central Propaganda Department, the CCTV played the video footage of the crash, the other mouthpiece the People's Daily denied the crash, citing reports from overseas media. The newspaper reported although there had been an in air issue with mechanical problem, the JH-7 landed normally and both pilots were safe.

A Shanghai resident was beaten to death at his home in Shanghai by local election officials two days ago on Oct 12, 2011. Hang Hongqi of 650-1, Jingyuan Rd, Hongqiao, Jiading District, Shanghai was beaten to death when he refused to sign the election ballots delivered by officials.

Unexpected Accident Hit Shanghai Subway

July 23, on bullet train rear-ended the other, unknown number of passengers perished. While the focus of investigation was the signal system ATP, which gave green light even when there was another train occupying the same segment of rail right ahead, it was revealed that many subway systems, including the Shanghai Subway used the same signal system. The authority attributes the cause of accident to lightning strike, vowed to keep an eye on weather, but refused to examine the signal system. The Central Propaganda Department issued an memo to forbid mentioning the subway signals. One Beijing reporter posted the memo to a micro-blog was suspended.

July 29, a Shanghai subway train traveled to the opposite direction for no reason. The authority blamed on the signal system, but guaranteed that Shanghai's subway carts (might head-on, but) would never rear-end, at the time when people's memory of the bullet train accident was still fresh.

September 26, A Shanghai subway train rear-ended the other around noon, more than 260 injured. The accident duplicated the bullet train accident train to every detail. The ATP signal system failed for unknown reason (no lightning strike underground). The Subway company used manual control, and lost count of trains and their whereabouts.

The official national TV station CCTV did not see it worth a word in its Evening News.

Same signal system was used by the No. 1 and No. 2 lines of Subway in Tehran, Iran. Was that project sponsored by the CIA?

China Red Cross Clarified on Restaurant Receipts

A snap shot of a restaurant receipt was posted on the Internet by anonymous people. It showed Red Cross paid $1,600 (Y9859 RMB) for a meal on 2/28/2011 in a private club 'Hui' in Shanghai. No other information was revealed. Many Chinese netizens were shocked by the bill, and demanded an explanation as well as an investigation on government corruption.

The Shanghai Red Cross clarified on Saturday that the money was from its own operating budget, rather than from accounts of donations. Also, as many as 17 persons, including clients and collaborating agencies were involved, therefore the per person bill was not high.

To read the figures with perspective, Shanghai's local poverty line is $75 per month for urban and suburban residents and $55 per month for rural residents, or about $2 per day per person.

On the other hand, the Communists Central Propaganda Department argued, comparing to the per diem rate published by the US State Department for Shanghai was $131 for meals and $229 for lodging per day for government employees, the exposed dining expense was by and large within this range.

Overseas Students Crimes

1. Orebro, Sweden. Shanghai girl Chen Hao was shopping with her roommate when Xiao Jun (alias) brutally stabbed her to death in public on March 31. Xiao Jun stayed at the scene until police came. Xiao Jun admitted he was the killer, and also stated he was not in a relationship with Chen Hao. Both graduated from Shanghai Lixin University of Commerce before going to Orebro University for Master's degree. It is believed "unrequited love" the motive for the murder. Chen, a communist Party member, expected to graduate this May. Xiao Jun, also a communist Party member and student leader, is expected to graduate in August, pending passing of two courses he failed earlier.

2. Providence, RI. In the morning of April 2, apartment room of Wu Xianglong and Yu Xiaoshuang was broken in by Hu Todd Zhenpeng and Shengfeng Alex Cui. It appeared the plan was to take Wu's Porsche and sell it in underground market. The girlfriend was left at the scene in a big suitcase. Wu was taken with them also in a suitcase to Malden, MA. Wu was able to get away from a bathroom he had been locked in. Todd was arrested, while Alex fled to China. Wu and Yu attend the Johnson and Wales University.

Bright Dairy Eye on Yoplait

Shanghai based Bright Dairy (aka Guangming Milk) entered the last round of the bidding process for 50% share of Yoplait Yogurt. "It's time for a better snack"

Bright Dairy has adopted an international expanding strategy with purchasing and merging. In 2010, Bright Dairy acquired 51% share of New Zealand's Synlait Milk.

Bright Dairy's overseas expansion at this time is mind-boggling in many ways. Not trusting mainland based dairy products after the past melamine record and most recent leather protein incident, Chinese have emptied shelfs of grocery store in neighboring Hong Kong and Macau. Obviously Bright Dairy is buying an oversea brand to re-badge its dairy products nobody wants. This may trigger a perfect storm for a round of buying western brand among mainland dairy companies. Without surprise, once the purchase went through, Bright Dairy would withdraw Yoplait from the international market and use it to crush other domestic competitors.

Even among the notorious dairy companies in China, Bright Dairy is the worse of the worst. As early as in 2005, Bright Dairy was caught wet hands re-newing dairy product with recycled old product, some already had gone riot. At the beginning, Bright Dairy denied the story. But when their special equipment to process riot old product was video-taped and aired in the TV program, they claimed it was an 'industrial wide standard procedure'. Because Chinese President Jiang Zemin was also CEO of the Bright Dairy, and because the Shanghai municipality's clout, Bright Dairy was not even fined, and the whole incident became of taboo. The media coverage and online protest were quickly silenced.

Bright Dairy was not dented from the incident and nobody dare to say anything regarding Bright Dairy's production procedure anymore. Some online posts alleged if the melamine incident was first revealed to be associated with the Bright Dairy, it would never have been allowed to expose.

Plastic Rice

An English blog cited a Vietnamese source 'Very Vietnam', which in turn referred to a Korean language 'Weekly Hongkong' who reported Singapore media alleging plastic rice discovered in market in Taiyuan of Shanxi Province, what a mouthful.

The Seagull hasn't had the privilege of tasting this edition of rice, therefore we can not confirm or rebut the truthfulness of the story. However, given the track record of food safety in the most recent years, nothing is impossible on this magic land.

Around 1996, a rare, expensive kind of rice, bamboo jasmine rice emerged in market. This rare kind of rice has a bamboo green, and a kind of bitter-mint smell of bamboo. Bamboo rice is heavily promoted as good to health. Two years later, it turned out these were ordinary rice with green color. This 'enhancement' technique was funded by China National Science Foundation, as hinted by this 1998 paper.

Around June, 2005, news reported thousands of tons of toxic rice (containing lethal amount of Aflatoxins per serving) in retail market in Beijing. This batch of rice was 'refurbished' by a company run by the Food Bureau of Beijing from old rice already removed from food produce process. The Food Bureau of Beijing denied the report, and insisted no old rice was re-introduced to the food process. Beijing municipal government admitted guilty with mounting evidence after half years of retail in October. The Food Bureau was fined $50,000.

Around 2011, news media reported a significant share of rice in China contained excessive cadmium, a by-product of industrial process. This is not really news worthy. As early as 2002, national testing results published by the Minister of Agriculture indicated 10.3% rice contains too much cadmium, and 28.4% contains too much lead, caused by industrial waste water being used for agriculture irrigation. No relief is expected because 1) there is no alternative source of water in affected areas; 2) it will be impossible to change the soil already contaminated. Century Weekly produced a map of cadmium rice.

A good hindsight guide in buying rice in China is to avoid good looking rice, because they were most likely polished, bleached from old rice. Also any type of jasmine rice should be avoided as they were made from artificially synthesized chemicals.

Readers familiar with what's happening in China know under the authoritarian ruling of the communist Party, no conduct without government endorsement could survive long enough to make a scandal. Bright Dairy of Shanghai was known for collecting riot milk from the market to reproduce new milk. Bright Dairy (Shanghai Stock Exchange 600597) was not punished even after a local TV station in Henan Province caught the entire process and aired it on national network. Former President Mr. Jiang Zemin was the president of Bright Dairy. The Three Deer (Sanlu) Dairy of Hebei Province received a National Science and Progress Award (2nd place, the highest ever in Dairy Industry) for its technique to mix melamine into milk product. With any luck, if the rumor were turned true), we would see the element of government sponsorship again behind the plastic rice incident.

There is no need to worry about food safety of government officials of all levels, because they eat produce only from specially designated 'Special Supply (Te4Gong1 in pinyin) Areas', where corps are grown with most strictly regulated traditional methods. History had proved again and again, sharing of resource with a closed circle is the most effective way of maintaining a regime.

Tianjin's New District Surpasses Shanghai's Pudong in 2010

According to the National Development and Reform Commission, Tianjin's Binhai District's GDP surpasses that of Shanghai's Pudong District by more than $20B in 2010. Tianjin's Binhai District is designated as the third pole of China's economic progress, after Shanghai's Pudong and Guangzhou. In 2009, Binhai produced GDP $550B, trailing Pudong's $570B.

Non-Sequitur: World Fair Surprise

Volunteers of the World Fair in Shanghai was trained to identify threats among the crowd. Detailed descriptions accompanied with vivid illustrations were offered to tell those who might be 1) Tibet Independence movement 2) Survivors of Tian'anmen massacre of 1989, and, 3) Falun Clut. The volunteers, all current college students, were surprised to hear of the massacre for the first time in their life.

'Guide to survive an earthquake' as such words: take shelter in hospitals and schools. In China, Netizens summarized after the two major earthquakes while the school buildings always collapse first, if not alone due to poor building quality, that people should look for government buildings instead, because they always stood.

In the duration of the World Fair, Internet users in Shanghai are allowed access to Twitter, Facebook, Youtube and Blogspot.

Thank you Mother Party, thank you World Fair.

Vancouver to Lose $5 Billion on Olympics

City of Vancouver has spent more than $6 Billion on the 2010 Winter Olympics games held there, but the direct and indirect income was not expected to exceed $1 Billion.

Vancouver will not be the first city to be hit by Olympics deficit. $1.5 Billion deficit from the 1976 Montreal Summer Olympics cost 30 years of local residents to pay back.

Even the historically profitable 1996 Summer Olympic in Atalanta left the southern capital with ghost streets and malfunction surveillance cameras that testify for the unhealable wounds from work of accounting genies.

Cities in China, however, always pocket in after holding international conventions, such as the Olympics and World Fairs, mysteriously. For example, Beijing Olympics committee announced last June that they had a pure revenue of $150 Million after holding the 2008 Summer Olympics.

Gross Details Emerged from Court Filings

Another national idol stumped. No, we were not talking about Tiger Woods. Gross details of a strange workplace relationship in a top Wall Street firm emerged from court filings. The defendant is a national idol of many overseas Chinese students, Ping Jiang. Jiang is named the most notable alumni of University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), a top ranking school famous for its small but elite science programs.

Jiang leads an all Chinese group at SAC Capital. One of his subordinates is Andrew Tong. A psychiatric evaluation posted at Deal Breakers revealed a 'strange' and gross working environment at the financial firm.

Tong, an analyst, was recruited by Jiang to his trading group, on a condition that Tong agreed to go through a training process, which would end at the time he made his first $10 million. Tong was told other members of Jiang's 20 some team also went through the said 'training program'.

The training program requires Tong to wear female clothing on daily basis, including all underwear, high heeled sandals and nail polish at workplace to make him 'less aggressive'. Tong was also asked to take female hormone (using his wife's birth control pills) to accompany the training. Tong must satisfy Jiang with a blow job at SAC during work hours before Jiang approves him to do one 'trade'. The report noted that if Jiang was not 'satisfied', a 'trade' would not be approved even after Tong performed the 'job'. At one point, Tong complained to Jiang that the female hormone made him impotent. To persuade Tong to continue taking the pills, Jiang 'choked' Tong from behind and insert dry erase markers (as in plural) into Tong's rectum. Tong admitted he got an erection as a result. At offices of SAC during work hours, Tong was constantly beat, kicked, or have Jiang urinate into his mouth in front of his colleagues. Jiang told Tong that the training program is a '...tradition of organizations working in an all male environment.'

Mr. Tong was not a no-body trying to survive on minimum pay. He quit from a doctoral program from Columbia University to make money. Before he joined Mr. Jiang's group, his annual salary was $250K plus bonus. He committed to the 'training' program because he wanted to make more money. He committed to the 'training program' for months because Mr. Jiang promised him once he went through, he would be allowed to trade independently and make millions of dollars himself.

Mr. Tong was informed that Brian Cohn, Mr. Jiang's supervisor and President of SAC, had approved the training program designed by Mr. Jiang. Cohn had a workplace behavioral psychologist Dr. Ari Kiev to evaluate the training program. Dr. Kiev observed Mr. Tong wearing feminine attire and found it acceptable.

When Tong finally complained to Elisabeth Go, an in-house counsel, and Margaret Belden, SAC's Human Resources Manager, the response was brief: "we know all about your accusations against Mr. Jiang .. we don't want to hear anymore details from you."

Mr. Tong was terminated on April 10, 2006, less than one year after he was recruited to Mr. Jiang's group at SAC.

When asked why he had abided with 'unusual' demands from Jiang, Tong cited Jiang as a national idol for USTC alumni who is powerful and successful. Tong said he would want to learn from Jiang and be as powerful and successful.

Judge Bernard Fried the New York State Supreme Court threw the lawsuit out because Tong "agreed to do so when SAC hired him, just like he agreed to glaze himself and jump out of a cake for the Big Guy’s birthday party."

Tong was born and raised in Shanghai. He graduated from Shanghai Communications University (SJTU). Tong came to the States in 1992.

Jiang was born in Jiangsu, a neighboring Province east to Shanghai. He graduated from USTC. Tong came to the States in 1989 and received a PhD degree in Chemistry from Princeton University. A 2007 Xinhua news featured Jiang as a top trader who made more than $100 million personal income in 2006.

"The Terminal" as in Reality Show at Narita International Airport of Tokyo Japan

As in the 2004 movie, Feng Zhenghu was stuck in the terminal. Even worse, there's no McDonard to pick break crumbles. To be precise, Mr. Feng was stuck at the gate of the immigration pathway, only that Mr. Feng has a reversed problem: he did not want to enter Japan, despite a deal made by the Chinese and Japanese government.

Mr. Feng is not anti-government. He is a scholar who uses his writing to shed light on the life of poor people in China. Despite a strong economy as a whole, the per capital personal income of an average Chinese people falls blow all of its Asian neighbors such as Vietnam and Thai, and blow majority of the African countries. Mr. Feng annoyed the communist government simply because he reached his hands to poor people in the city he lives, Shanghai. To play down the possible political tone of his suffering, he cautiously not ask for coming back to China, but asking going back to Shanghai.

A Chinese citizen, Mr. Feng went to Japan for a short visit, but was denied entrance at Shanghai International Airport. Air Japan kidnapped Mr. Feng, by force at witness of hundreds of passengers on Nov 4, 2009, back to Japan under pressure from their business partnership in China.

Mr. Feng refused to enter Japan. He has since made eight attempted to return to China, but was denied and 'deported' each and every time.

An active human rights advocate, Mr. Feng had been persecuted by the communist government ever since the Tian'anmen Square Massacre in 1989. Even a three years jail time couldn't shut him silence. Mr. Feng had been a voice for poor people's welfare. The communist government adopted an innovative approach, to get a foreign company (Air Japan) to kidnap a Chinese citizen from Shanghai to Japan. The government had hoped Feng would stay in Japan in fear.

Mr. Feng believed he had committed no crime. He refused to enter Japan, and had been staying in the busy international arrival terminal at the Tokyo Narita International Airport for two weeks. The only way to move in the terminal is forward, to the immigration passage. The Japanese government at the request of the Chinese government has banned residents in Japan to provide food to Mr. Feng, counting Mr. Feng will move forward into Japan.

Each day, thousands of international travelers pass Mr. Feng's sitting place to enter Japan. If you are going to Japan, please bring Mr. Feng some food, toothpaste, etc. Thank you.

Mr. Feng's twitter account. Vidly video showing surroundings of the terminal. A detailed account of the ordeal.

Mr. Feng is a Chinese citizen. If Mr. Feng had committed any crime, the Chinese government should take him in and charge him accordingly. If Mr. Feng did not break any law, as a Chinese citizen, he is entitled to return to his home country. The incident had drawn attention from Japanese media as well as other media around the world.

When contacted by media, Japanese immigration official confirmed Mr. Feng was carried to Narita by Air Japan, but did not comment on the accusation of forceable kidnapping committed by Air Japan employees.

Dear Party, stop embarrassing yourself.

Air Japan, in a statement, criticized Mr. Feng for making a scene when he was kidnapped by force by Air Japan's employees to the flight back Japan. Air Japan was subsequently humiliated by the attending media in the press conference, and retracted the statement.

Japanese government played an unethical collaborator role in the incident. We can't ask much from Japanese government. However, stop making yourself a fool, like the communist Chinese government already did, in front of the world (in the least, in front of thousands of confusing international traveler passing Mr. Feng's spot).

How can you help?

  • You can contact the Japanese government, or your nearby Japanese consulate and asked for Mr. Feng's case. Ask them why a civilized government will collaborate with the communist rugime. Ask them how come Air Japan get away from kidnapping a citizen by force from another country and carry him back even without a ticket? Although the Japanese government played a lesser role than the communist China, they probably are under higher level of scrutiny from their own citizens and the international society. They are also a capable party in the ordeal since Mr. Feng is now staying on Japanese soil.
  • You can contact Chinese government or your nearby Chinese consulate. In additional, you should raise the case whenever there's an event of public relationship significance. For example, a TV show featuring a Chinese expert or a radio interview of a Chinese diplomat. Tell them feel free to shot Mr. Feng after he returns to China if they find him of violating any Chinese/Communist law. However, show the international community that China does have a legal system by following it.
  • You can join twitter and follow Mr. Feng's feeds. Somewhere the communist government must be following the case, and make them fear when counting the number of people who are following the story.
  • You can bring some food, cloth, books and batteries to Mr. Feng is you enter Japan through Tokyo International Airport. You can ask a friend to do it for you if you have a friend going there. Mr. Feng is stuck there in the international arrival terminal right before the immigration checkpoint, and it's hard to miss him.
  • You can vote with your money by boycotting Air Japan. There are plenty alternatives to use on any international routes operated by Air Japan.
  • Post the story on every venues you have access: Facebook, Youtube, to name a few. Ask your Chinese friends what do they think. Because of the effective media block and brainwash in the Chinese media world, an excellent job done by the propaganda branch of the communist government, less Chinese are aware of the incident than western readers.
  • You can show off your art talent by making a song, video about the real world 'The Terminal' ordeal and upload it to popular video sharing site, such as YouTube. If you happened to live next door to Tom Hanks, you may asked them to re-do his popular movie, only this time based it on a true story. Although there is not much you can if you do not live in China or Japan, you can certainly make every communist diplomat's public life miserable. They will report through their chain of command, especially when it's not their personal fault.

Don't Help Strangers, They Could be Shanghai Cops

For a moment, imagine you were driving to work on any busy morning commute. It was 7:45 and the red light just won't let it go. You may sign, you may swear, but suddenly a couple in shabby clothing opened your back doors and sat on your car. Before you recovered from the shock, they would tell you that the woman was suffering a severe stomach pain, and that they had been unable to hire a taxi for twenty minutes. They asked you to take them to the nearest hospital. They would beg you, and praise your ancestors for your kindness, but they wouldn't leave your car until you said okay.

Many drivers showed their kindness, but was arrested and beaten by the police at the 'hospital' entrance. They police would charge you for illegal operating taxi business. They would give you a 10,000 RMB ($1,600) fine or throw you in jail.

The mass 'sting' operation happened in Shanghai, where the police pockets millions of fines in the first day. It didn't last too long, because almost all drivers were alerted by their relatives and friends who had fell victims. Tens of thousands of Shanghai drivers had mobilized on the Internet to retaliate the brute violation of civil rights.

226 Days later, Shanghai is going to host the World Fair. Since the Shanghai government endorsed the police's operation, private car owners of Shanghai are launching a campaign to appeal the case to the attendees of the World Fair by sticking a bumper sticker which reads 'Don't Help Strangers, They Could be Cops'.

Top Lawyers on Bottom Cases

You don't usually see top lawyers work on small cases, but it's not automatically means a piece of cake success for sure, in China.

Liu Xiaoyuan is a high profile Beijing lawyer. For most of the past year, he tried all he could for a fair trail for Yang Jia. Shanghai police kidnapped Yang Jia's mother and locked her up in a mental facility for several months, until they killed Yang Jia. The case was so controversial that many people who never heard of Yang Jia traveled from all across the country to gather in front of Shanghai police bureau to protest. Many of them were arrested. Liu's blog covering the case become the focal point of people's attention. It was chosen as the 'Best Chinese Blog' by the Voice of Germany radio station. Liu followed up every possible threads within the law, and was stoned walled all the way along. Beijing government suspended license of all lawyers in Liu's YiTong Law Firm for half year on March 17, 2009. In a sense, this is a recklessly stupid move, as it converted Liu into a full time writer posting angry anti-government blogs.

Zhou Ze is an insider of the Communism justice system. Ten years ago when he was a clerk of the supreme court, he handled a case that a business woman Liu Ningli was robbed by Shanghai court of all her property, $4 million. It sounds a lot, but not that much for corrupted official's appetite. A small case indeed. Zhou had been working on the same for ten years to no end. Currently he is an associate professor in the Communist Youth League Academy and an established lawyer. He had been using his connections in the case. Three Congressmen introduced five bills regarding this specific case. The Justice Department instructed the Justice Department of Shanghai to appeal the original verdict. The Supreme Court picked up the case. Even the Central Discipline Committee of the CCP examined the case. Everyone told him the case is an obvious abuse of power. In March 2009, Zhou openly dared the legal system that if the case couldn't reach a satisfactory conclusion, he would exhausted all his resource and connections to veto the Supreme Court's Annual Report on the 17th National Congress. The case was not solved, and the Supreme Court received the lowest approval rate in history. However, nobody can do anything to it. It's so reticular that it is not funny.

Liu is a high profile lawyer with enormous media influence. Zhou is an Communist justice system insider with connections to the very top level. Though they were both tumbled by small cases. The ruling class is so terrified by the people, that they have to endorse every crime, regardless of how insignificant it may appears, committed by every corrupted official at the cost of the credit of itself.

<Farewell my Concubine (1993)> is acclaimed as one of the best movies in Chinese motion picture history. Through the life story of two Beijing Opera artists, traditional art was seen struggling through economic tough time, Japanese invasion, but not under communist reign.

Mr. Hu Jintao should pray that God be with him on every day and night, because under the mounting pressure of people's distrust on the communism generated by the communist government itself, any crack overlooked by Hu could explode the entire system into pieces.

VT Killing

A 22 years old female Virginia Tech student was fatally stabbed in a school student center, Graduate Life Center (GLC) where the girl resides. The victim is Yang Xin, a graduate student in Accounting from Beijing. Yang Xin was known as a diligent student who graduated from Memorial University of New Foundland in Canada. Yang earned a BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration) in merely two years. After graduation Yang interned at a Subway store as assistant manager while preparing for GMAT, the entrance exam for graduate study in Business School. Yang arrived the States only days ago on Jan 8, 2009 to start her study at VT.

The killer is Zhu Haiyang, a graduate assistant in the Agriculture and Applied Economics Department. Zhu comes from Ningbo in Zhejiang Province. The killer was educated in Shanghai. According to posts on Internet forums, the killer got know the victim when he picked up the girl at the airport, arranged by the VT Chinese student association as a volunteer service for new students. The duo were seen together at the Au Bon Pain restaurant on the first floor of GLC around 7 pm Wednesday evening. There had been no sign of argument. Then the girl called 911; then the killer stabbed the girl. When police arrived, they found the murderer with the knife, and the girl, ..., decapitated. Officer Nicole Irvine who responded to the 911 call 'observed the suspect holding the head of the victim in his hand (Police Search Warrant Affidavit).' The killer has a personal web space at QQ titled 'Ocean's Ocean'.

The killer's apartment management staff described him as "rude and belligerent". Will Segar, the landlord said Zhu only came to his attention because of his bellicose interaction with those around him. Segar even talked to a Blacksburg police after he observed Zhu harassing other people. However, the officer told Segar there was nothing he could do, and suggested Segar talked to the international affairs at VT. Segar went ahead, but did not receive any 'useful advice on how to deal with Zhu.'

The killer's academic background was questioned too. Zhu graduated from a little known college after the Chinese government expand the college enrollment by ten times (from 600,000 per year in late 80s to 6 million per year in the 90a). His fellow Chinese friends praised him for English skills, but both his academic adviser Denise Mainville and the department head Kevin Boyle murmured on his academic performance when inquired by reporters. The vetting process of VT is obviously flawed to have admitted any students from these kind of nobody-heard-of schools. Nonetheless, a VT nod gave the killer a virtual mandate to act at will and a false sense of entitlement. It's possible. as speculated on the Net, the killer was angered so easily by hearing a single word 'no'. It's possible though, the killer had already been scolded by the Tech and had been facing a disgraceful dismissal, which might prompt him to execute one last stunt.

Although there's no easy way to prevent a sick murder from acting crazy thoughts into action, some alleged that the role the Association of Chinese Students and Scholars (ACSS) at Virginia Tech played was facilitated by the killer. People on online forums accused them to have arranged the killer to pick up the girl from the airport. The girl was also arranged to live in the killer's apartment for four days before she was assigned a school housing unit at GLC, where she was killed. After the incident, the ACSS promptly sent out a message barring anyone from disclosing any information. The ACSS also deleted all relevant discussions at a maillist and an online forum exclusive to Chinese students and scholars at VT. The killer has been known as an enthusiastic member of the ACSS, an official organization sponsored by the communism government. Some see the ACSS, an organization supposed to benefit all Chinese students, was utilized by a small group of greedy former communists (or communists wannabes) with personal interest. Simply put, any such communism outpost should have been banned from ground of college campus.

The victim's mother in Beijing was notified by telephone last night.

Yang Jia Murdered

Confucius said, those who made up the idea to have people buried alive with their masters did not deserve any offspring.

Mao Zedong, challenged by his general Peng Dehuai on wrongdoings that led millions of Chinese people starving to death, cited Confucius' words cursing himself. Mao had two sons, one suffered from mental problem, the other was killed by American bombings. Mao proclaimed since he already lost all of his offspring, he had the mandate to be crazy.

Yesterday, a young man Yang Jia, China's modern day Robin Hood, was murdered by the Communism system. Those who helped in killing Yang Jia, shall them no offspring!

Victim's Mother Feared to have been Suicided by Shanghai Police

Bing Suicided: verb (Chinese Internet), a person who is killed, and subsequently is declared to have committed suicide by the Communism government

It has been three months since Yang Jia's mother was kidnapped by Shanghai Police. Although Shanghai Government claimed to have contact with her, including obtaining her agreement to assign a Shanghai government employee to be Yang Jia's defense lawyer, nobody outside Shanghai government has seen her since.

Lawyers close to the case were circulating a rumor today that Yang Jia's mother had been 'suicided' by the Shanghai Police. Victims or related persons are often suicided by police in China. However, so far, in recent years that almost always happened in remote rural counties. In larger cities, people are often jailed or simply beaten instead. For example, lawyer Zheng Enchong of Shanghai was jailed 5 years for representing people who lost home to government sponsored development in a civil case against real estate developers. It is a rare incident that a relative of victim is suicided by the police in a large city like Shanghai.

Yang Jia, a Beijing resident, was unlawfully detained and beaten by Shanghai police on a leisure trip. Shanghai police beat Yang's penis, and made Yang incompete permanently. After being released, Yang complained through official channels but Shanghai police refused to apologize. After a year long procedure going nowhere, Yang stabbed 6 Shanghai Police who had beaten him with a knife. Yang's mother Ms. Wang Jing was kidnapped by Shanghai police under the nose of Beijing Police. Yang was sentenced to death by Shanghai court.

Dozens of attorneys rushed to defend Yang on pro bono, with authorization from Yang's father. However, they were denied access on the basis that the Shanghai government had obtained Yang's mother's request to assign a Shanghai government lawyer to represent Yang. Because no one besides the Shanghai government had access to Yang's mother, the arrangement could not be challenged.

The purpose of the arranged lawyer is largely to have hide what had happened, and the lawyer assigned by the Shanghai government achieved just that by avoid asking any question regarding the original unlawful arrest and beaten at all.

Now that the trail was over, and Yang was sentenced to death, Yang's mother was subsequently conveniently suicided by the Shanghai Police.

Killing Yang Jia

According to the communism government, Chinese in China enjoy civil rights five times better than Americans in the US. When the Chinese version John Brown was captured, he would not be hanged immediately, but rather to receive not one fair trail, but two trails.

Beijing resident Yang Jia was accused of killing six Shanghai policemen with a knife is a heavily guarded police headquarter in Shanghai. The ordeal started when Yang was wrongly imprisoned and tortured by Shanghai police after a routine traffic (bicycle) stop, because the Shanghai policeman suspected Yang was riding a stolen bike. After being released, Yang started an endeavor of complaining about his treatment while detained by the Shanghai police. Yang raised enough noise, that Shanghai police sent two officers to Beijing to negotiate a settlement. It is alleged that Yang's penis was badly beaten, and Yang suffered from erection problems. Shanghai offered to pay RMB 1000 ($170), but no apology. Yang asked RMB $3000 ($500) plus an apology, and Yang was not willing to bargain.

By and large, people from Beijing look down on people from Shanghai. Shanghainese were seen with a stereotype of being greedy, dishonest but with no courage. Being badly beaten by Shanghainese, regardless of how many of them are there or whether they are policemen, is a shame too heavy to bear for a Beijing resident. After months of complaining going nowhere, Yang decided to take things into his own hands.

Yang appeared in the gateway of police headquarter, with a gas mask covering his face. He throw a Molotov cocktail to the garden, which attracted the attention of securities, then entered the building. Yang stabbed 3 policemen on the first floor, then went up fire stairs to the 21st floor to killed 3 more police. The first floor was occupied by the unit who wrongly detained Yang, and the 21st floor was occupied by the unit who tortured Yang afterward. One innocent police was killed on the 18th floor when he accidentally used the fire stairs assuming the building was on fire. In the whole process, Yang made sure he did not hurt anyone not wearing a uniform, and he did not hurt any female officers.

Yang surrendered after having done his business. There's no chance of leaving alive anyway, surrounded by thousands of Shanghai policemen on 21st floor. Yang knew he would be sentenced to death according to Chinese laws, but he had a bigger plan, that was to disclose his suffering under detainment of Shanghai police to the world in the trail. It turned out to be the mission impossible.

Yang didn't know that one of the police officer who beat him was a relative of Mr. Wu Zhiming, the top police in Shanghai, and a senior official of CCP. Wu Zhiming is the niece of Mr. Jiang Zeming, the former Party boss of China.

The country was told seven cops were killed, but it was not told that was because of crime involved another policeman, who happened to be a family member of senior CCP Party leader. In order to hide the truth, the entire justice system was kidnapped.

Shanghai police kidnapped Yang Jia's mother from her Beijing residence under day light. It was such an bazaar scene. Yang's relatives protested to the local Beijing police station. Beijing police was so annoyed at first that they asked Shanghai police to return the lady through a statement issued to a press. Shanghai police then announced that Yang's mother appointed a lawyer for Yang, who is also Shanghai police's in house counsel. Yang's mother was not to be seen, until today. Many prominent lawyers in Beijing sued the Shanghai police for kidnapping Yang's mother, and sued Beijing police for not protecting a Beijing resident from being kidnapped under bright daylight. Many influential writers published open letter condemning the kidnapping, to no vein. It is just bazaar.

The trail was supposed to be open, but conducted secretly by a Shanghai court. Several dozens of Beijing lawyers rushed to Shanghai was denied by the Shanghai court. The trail was supposed to be announced at least three days in advance according to Chines law, but was not. Even Yang's father was not allowed to attend the trail, citing space limitation.

Yang was sentenced to death in the first trail by Shanghai Second Middle Court on Sept 1st, 2008, which Yang appealed. The second trail, which would be the ultimate trail in Chinese law, drew even more controversy. Again, the defense lawyer was named by the court, who acted as one of the prosecution in the trail. Again even more lawyers invited by the Yang family was denied by the court. Still, Yang's mother is detained by unknown agency at undisclosed location. What's more, supporters who peacefully rallies outside the court from all over the country was arrested and jailed. Those who are Shanghai residents had their home searched, and property confiscated.

It would be easier to comprehend the bazaar behavior of Shanghai justice system, if the case was about national interest, or in the least about any metropolitan interest. However, it's all about a policeman, who is alleged a family member of a CCP official. Does it worth it?

Yang is sentenced to death, as expected. But why does it necessary to murder a prisoner in such a bazaar manner that the entire justice system was thrown in? What kind of a signal is sending out by murdering Yang, with the full strength of the Party?

On any given day, dozens if not hundreds of innocent people died from police brutality in every corner of China. Some day some one will say enough is enough.

"[...] Politically speaking, the murder of John Brown would be an uncorrectable sin. It would create in the Union a latent fissure that would in the long run dislocate it. Brown's agony might perhaps consolidate slavery in Virginia, but it would certainly shake the whole American democracy. You save your shame, but you kill your glory. Morally speaking, it seems a part of the human light would put itself out, that the very notion of justice and injustice would hide itself in darkness, on that day where one would see the assassination of Emancipation by Liberty itself. [...]

Let America know and ponder on this: there is something more frightening than Cain killing Abel, and that is Washington killing Spartacus."
